those beaches on Grand Traverse Bay where you are talking about are rocky....good rock picking, if you enjoy that. I do...and always fill all my pockets.
The Lake Michigan (west side) are sandy for miles and miles. It's there you will also find the Petosky stones. Stones unique to only this area in the whole world.
Matter of fact...you'll be staying VERY close to a good sand beach spot. CatHead Bay....just straight across from your relatives house over on the Lake Michigan side. Great spot for Petoskies...and driftwood. I like to make mobiles and lamps and such from interesting driftwood.
