Houston Community College

I'm still about 3 months out before I can start any kind of school, but I decided to pay for it myself rather than go with company training. There are two schools here in Houston that offer the program but HCC has a evening class that's 4 weeks longer and allows me to keep working all the while. It's going to be a tough 12 weeks (7am-4pm work & 6-10pm school) but I've done it before.

I was just wondering if anyone else has taken this class from HCC or knows of anyone who has. I'm going to give the department head a call tomorrow and ask which companies hire from there and go from there.

I went through HCC. Excellent school.

I finished the 7 week day course on a Friday and I was in Tulsa for orientation with Arrow on Sunday. Now I'm driving for PSC here in Houston making REALLY good money. I wouldn't be if I went to a CDL mill.

The usual suspects will come to the classes - Werner, Covenant, USA Truck, Coca-Cola, McIlroy, etc.

PM me with any questions, or just continue the thread.

It's good to hear that you were with Arrow right after school. It's them and TMC at the top of my list right now. Did they come to the school or did you apply on your own?

PhuzzyGnu 10-06-2006 07:06 PM

I applied on my own. In fact, I had orientation with Arrow set up before I even started the classes.

Arrow is a very good company. So is TMC.

Running Houston Regional for Arrow had me home, sleeping in my own bed (granted, not doing much else at home) several times a week. Mostly you run pipe, pipe, and more pipe to Louisiana and back.

I hadn't even checked out the regional link on their homepage before just now. It's cool that they have that but I'm more interested in the longhaul. Is that a option or do they just stick you with Regional because that's were you live?

And it looks like I need to give them a call in about two months time.

Thanks for all the information. Much appreciated.

Oh yeah, they do longhaul.

HCC

HCC has an excellent progam. By taking and paying for the 7 week course you will have plenty of options after graduation.

They also offer a 3 week company sponsored program for USA Truck, Steven's Transport and CRST. But by going this route you will be locked into a 1 year contract to these companies. And if you break that contract, they will charge you twice what it would have cost you for the 7 week course.

Once again..rather than starting a new thread.

Is the CDL test in Texas multiple choice or written? The book says written but any and all practice test I have seen/taken have been MC.

Just curious.

multiple choice

Thanks.

Dumb question, I know. And I figured as much. But I just wanted to make sure. I got two and a half months until school and then 12 weeks of school, so I'm sure I'll be asking a few more questions of this regard.
