C B Cobra 29 where to get it Peeked & Tuned
 

I have a Cobra 29 Night Watch and I do not think it is getting out as good as it should.
I wonder if anyone can tell me where to get it peeked and tuned to do it’s best.

theirs nothing wrong with a cobra 29 had mine for 4 years now.

If youre ever on I-20 west of Ft Worth, there is a radio shop called, Clays. On HWY 287 in Bowie, 60 miles north of Ft Worth, there is one called Rustys. Those are the 2 that I know of, if youre ever around them.

The best thing you can do for your 29 is get a good single antenna and HQ coaxil. Then make sure to have your SWR's set correctly, that will give you better tx/rx than a peak/tune kit. Not to mention there are a lot of "hacks" out there that claim to make big numbers when they peak and tune but in reality you got maybe 3-5 watts extra.

To make your 29 sound like a "big radio" you will spend 80-100+, but then you will absolutely need a good antenna and coaxil for it to work properly. Hope that helps.

Recently bought the firestik antenna, $20 at a T/A. Tuned it, got my SWR to 1.5 If I replace my co-ax I'd probably add to the distance I could get out.

The big loud radios you hear, you know echoed out, over modulated, sound horrrrrrilble.

Only other thing I'm gonna add is a noise canceling/reduction mic. Just want to have clean clear sound from my radio.

By the way, Cost of set up using road miles came to $105 out of pocket.

Figure out I curently get out between 5-7 miles. Talked to a driver who was giving me his mile markers. This is with crappy co-ax, and leaving my mic gain at 3/4 turn.

I bolded the part that I want to focus on with this post.

Most of the guys you hear that sound over modulated had a "hack" work on their radio. They also have their echo and mic gain set way to high.

I run a general lee that will talk for 15 miles in the pocono's of Pennsylvania (I.E lots of hills and valleys), and can assure you that my radio does not sound like those wanna be's with their 50 dollar peak and tune from the truck stop.

Not saying you couldn't, but would have to see/hear it to be convinced. Either way a properly peaked and tuned radio can and will get out, and and sound great. It just comes down to how much money you want to spend. I personally don't like the echo, and any other mod that add Sndfx.

I probably won't get it done my self, though will invest in better co-ax (seen proof that helps tremendously) and a Noise canceling mic. That would be about it.

What kind of antenna are you running.

I use a single MM-9 Monkey Made right now, a co-worker of mine is making me a custom antenna as we speak, it will be similar to the Monkey Made except it will use higher quality connections at the base of the whip and at the coaxil connection.

Also I my echo is at about 1/8th and Mic Gain is at half since I have a quiet low quiet voice, I also use and Astatic noise canceling mic. My radio is also setup to run a 250 linear amp for when out west. But I can only run it when the radio is switched to low power as I don't use it all the time.

get a good antenna. one of the best is the predator 10-k a good ground & tune swrs. a good mic will help a whole lot too. the astatic 636l or the rk-56 are great & not real expensive. you can get online too. i have a gen lee & it rocks crystal clear & loud. no distortion. for any & all questions reguarding cb's try www.cbradiotalk.com this is a great forum. they have all the answers. radioactive radios.com is a sponsor there & has the stuff to lock down the down.

I didn't have a very good expierence with Radioactive Radios. I bought a radio from them and it shorted out after 2 months and they would not fix it even though it was supposed to be under warranty.

Up until yesterday I'd been running a Uniden 68. Over the past few months I've been noticing more and more that I'm not receiving as good as it used to (it was still transmitting fine).

So, yesterday, while driving along, I hit a good sized bump on the interstate. The cb started smoking - literally. I pulled off to the side and had to pull the power wires.

Got to a cb shop and had it looked at. The insides were ok except for one part (dunno what it was) and he said it'd cost about $45 for parts/labor to repair.

So, I traded my fried radio for a used peaked/tuned Galaxy 949.

Muuuuuuuch better now.

I hear that the Galaxy's do not fair well with all the vibration in the truck.....does anyone concur or disbute that rumor?

Yup, and I just dropped it off to my normal radio guy yesterday, 200 bucks to fix it. AKA put it back together normally, that also includes the charge for a new echo board and to tune it properly as the radioactive guys actually made it preform worse than stock. :evil:
