Depends on what you are going to do with it somewhat. If you are an overclocker, then AMD. I overclock the holy-crap out of those processors. Intel doesn't overclock so well. Also, AMD is usually cheaper for the same relative speeds. There is a fantastic chart and comparison page at the following link:
http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu_2007.html Please note that there are several ways to view the charts and on some of them LOWER is BETTER and on others HIGHER is BETTER. So look at the bottom of each chart to see which is better. It will clearly show you the performance of both Intel and AMD.
Just as important when building your own system is the motherboard, the memory, and the video card. You have to do your homework on all of the hardware before deciding on a build (not just the processor.)
Get a dual-core or quad-core, whichever brand you decide on.
