I want to replace my 10 speed with a 13 speed transmission.

I currently have a 2004 freightliner century with a 10speed transmission. I would like to replace it with a 13 speed transmission. Do I need to change out the rears as well or is this a simple drop and replace. Im going to ask my mechanic today or tomorrow when I pick the truck up. I like the 13 speed transmission. last one I drove was great. Truck pulled the hills and was great on fuel.

The dimension of the transmissions are different, so you would probably have to have a drive shaft made to replace the one from transmission to carrier bearing. You shouldn't have to do anything to the rears, but that presumes you have an overdrive 10 speed. If it is a direct drive 10 speed, then you would hardly be able to use the gears above 11 (direct drive) on the 13. The top hole on a 13, and say 1500 rpm, would have you bumping up against well into the 90-100 mph range with 2.64 rears, depending on the tire size. But if the 10 is an overdrive version, it would be just a swap.

personaly i'd save the money on the trans for the egr... again.. and again..

It should bolt right up, if it doesn't come with a bellhousing the ten speed piece will fit. You use the same shift lever, just change the knob. The drive shaft will have to be shortened a few inches. You should compare top gear ratios between them to see which box(RT or RTO) to use.

firebird, you are exactly right, this damn egr is killing me. I have replaced the valve, vpod, p-sensor, and now the canister and it still showing a code on the dashboard. Pretty much a brand new system, no worries. I may trade this thing in on something else tired of the egr problem....

Check out Justus Built | American Parts, American Quality, American Made for taking care of EGR problems. That is assuming you have a Detroit in there. Relatively inexpensive and I know a couple of guys who use it and really like it.

its really a shame. i love the 14l detroits. i might be looking for a second truck but the EGR kills me. however, i'd try that product that copperhead showed. if it wasnt for the EGR i'd deal with the truck sounding like a coffee maker, and a rusty hampster wheel.

Firebird, I've been reading up on this egr problem as my truck has this bucking and coughing feeling when I accelerate. Just finished reading a thread about inspecting/replacing the Plastic adaptor plate that regulates the exhaust to the delta p sensor. Im going to swing by freightliner and see if I can find one. I heard the cost is around $20 bucks. If the adaptor connection is broken or cracked this can cause a fault code in the system, also causing bad air flow thru the transfer case. I will let you know what I find out.
