Add on Jakes?
 

I sold my old KW today and am looking at another. This truck does not have a engine brake though.How hard and how costly is it to add jakes? Engine is a C-15 Cat.

My guess would be that it would involve an engine modification, and the switches and controls. Perhaps an addition to the software in the ECM. But, I would expect that the wiring would already be in the cable harness.

I've seen the wiring in the cables of trucks for fog lights, even though the lights and switches were never installed.

We encountered the same scenario when the boss bought a used International with a C15 that had no Jake.

Cat shop quoted about $4000.00 to retrofit it with a Jake brake.

Boss decided not to spend the money and the truck still remains "Jake less".

No problem. My new truck had none so I bought whole kit and put them on myself in my driveway. No big deal. Just make sure the forecast is for clear skies. Been a long time ago - I think the price was $1200 for Jacobs 346D. My torque wrench only goes to 250 so I had to guess on the head bolts. Time says I guessed right!

You need to torque head bolts to install jakes? Series 55?

That KW is very likely already completely wired for Jakes. Most trucks are. Just a matter of installing a set...make DAMN sure you put the right ones on, and turning them on in the ECM.

a little tip for you, just use 2 torque wrenches:cool::cool:

Anyway now I have torque multiplier so it's taken care of.... and 2 torque wrenches.

The point was that the series 55 was one of the few engines that ever used cylinder head bolts to secure jake housings. A C15 does not
