Detroit Engine

The truck I drive has a Detroit with 433,000 miles on it.Lately,while loaded and going uphill,it act like it farted and then blow out some black smoke.Doesn't do it except on a hill and then only occasionally.Any ideas?

maybe the EGR valve.
