Radiator Cap Question?

On my Cat Motor C-15 475, I replaced the cap, but the old one did not have any numbers on it. The local parts guy told me that what he could look up it called for either a 10 lb or 15 lb pressure.

I asked him what difference it would make and he told me that if it was a 15 lb and I went to a 10 lb it might run hot since it wouldn't hold back pressure right.

He said that if it was a 10 lb and I put a 15 lb pressure on it there would be be no harm in this.

I bought the 15 lb to be sure. Both were the same cost so he was not selling me a higher price item.

What is your advice on this?

It won't run hotter, but it will boil sooner with a 10 lb vs. a 15 lb.

Of course you run a higher chance of blowing a hose with more pressure, but todays hoses are very well built.

You won't hurt a thing, unless you already have a leak.

I guess the best way to find out would be to call a CAT Dealer wouldn't it?

CAT dealer should be able to take your VIN and tell you exactly what it came with..... or someone here with the same setup.....

Actually, since Cat didn't put the radiator or cap on the truck, a KW dealer would be a better choice. Just give them the last six digits of your S/N and they can look up the exact cap used on your application. No guessing involved.

^ yeah, that's what I meant......

it's true that cat didn't put the cap on, but they certainly DID tell them which one it was getting ; )

either should be able to give you an accurate answer
