I have the old style drums (centrifuge?)that need to be replaced at a cost of 290.00 per drum, drum only not install. Is there a way to switch to a steel drum which cost a lot less?

Yes.

You might have to change studs.

Centrifuse drums are not "old style".

They are a light weight, albeit expensive alternative to cast drums. You are looking at about 60lbs per drum difference in weight. Centrifuse drums are fabricated from sheet steel onto which molten iron is applied in a centrifuge process.

The two style drums are completely interchangeable, with no need for stud change, so unless you need the weight savings, go for the cast and spend the $$ you save on something else.

I went to another parts store on Friday and they said to bring them my drum number and they'll give me some options.

Somebody else I was talking to said 180.00 is more reasonable for a centrifuge drum.

Incorrect, some trucks will need new studs in the hubs, because the cast drums are thicker, you may not have enough thread engagement with the wheel nuts.

Mine was fine, from what I hear I got lucky.

Well.........I must be "lucky" also, I have changed out several trucks over the years and never had to change the studs either. Maybe I should buy some lottery tickets, eh ? :lol:

I highly doubt the manufacturers are going to have not only different length studs for aluminum or steel wheels, and different lengths for cast or centrifuse drums. That would be like 4 different combinations. Sheesh, you ever heard of standardization?
