Steer Tires
Hey All,
Havent been on here in a while and during my ventures on the road I ran into a guy who claims to have 400K on his steer tires. He's driving a W9 pulling a 7 car hauler. It all depends on conditions and tires, but how many miles do you usually get on the steers??? |
I get 240k, maybe he's talking 400k KM's?

I get rid of mine at 125,000 no matter what they look like, I DO NOT take chances with steer tires.
In the late 80's I had a steer tire blowout and that was enough for me. My KW is 11,000 on the steers as a bobtail, getting a few extra miles out of tires is NOT worth it in my opinion. |
I wouldn't take any chances with a steer tire either. Depending on mileage, I'd ditch them when they get to 8/32, but that's just me.
I was driving a tri-axle dump last week when I came on a rolled tri-axle running the same route as me to the construction site. He lost a right steer, hit the guardrail, then the truck flipped on it's side and slide about 200'. Just before stopping in the skid, it hit a schoolbus. Bearly hit it. Luckily it was empty. The truck driver needed a change of underwear lol. Otherwise he was ok. |
With my current job the steers an drives are only good for about a year. I might git 75,000 mayby a little more but not much more.

I don't understand why people think maximizing tire life is somehow risky?
If you maintain the tire with proper pressure and a good valve/stem, you won't have a problem. That's all there is to it. |
