owner just had engine rebuilt @ freightliner dealership. ran it for a little over a year, had an oil change and found chunks of metal in oil. drove the unit home, back to the freightliner dealership. was told spun the main bearing. after doing some research @ the dealership the warranty ran out about 6 weeks after the warranty coverage. the owner didn't purchase the extended warranty on the motor. Now the dealership wants another $17,000 to rebuild the motor again with a 2 yr warranty, what does one do. go rebuilt or get a good used engine. WITH THE MOTOR BEING rebuilt the first time, what all would it take to get it back in shape again. SPUN MAIN BEARING WHAT EXACTLY IS THAT?

If it's got a spun main bearing, that engine has to come out of the truck, get completely disassembled, and the block must be align bored by a machine shop before it can be rebuilt again.

Big $$$$$

IMHO it would be better to go with a factory re manufactured long block.

Probably not much difference moneywise, completely warranteed, and less downtime than doing all that machine work and custom rebuilding the existing engine.

I would not deal with that dealership again. Obviously they're not going to cut you some slack.

Go directly to detroit.

the condition of the crank may make this an easy decision, you'll have to weigh out the costs vs. downtime and do the math... but, i'm thinking the previous 2 responses spelled it out pretty well

I would go long block. Spun bearing -- was this the cause of metal chunks in the oil or was that progressive from something else?

Chunks of metal is subjective - we talking slivers or a 50 cent piece?

I've had it with going through Detroit. Bought a Detroit reman head for my 12.7L 500HP for $2100. Came without valve seals. They sent seals and we made a tool and put them on without removing the head. Big time oil consumption. 6 months later, we're down for an overhaul. I tore down the head, found all 24 valve guides worn completely out, intake valves seated improperly, wasting the intakes. Suspected that as the overhead had tightened itself up on the intake side. This $2100 head was just a worn out piece of junk and Detroit says that because they didn't install it, no warranty.

Bought a Detroit reman turbo at the same time as the head. upon removal, found the compressor wheel contacting the housing. Began installing the overhaul kit for the turbo and the 2 seal rings right behind the turbine wheel were not even in there. There was a snap-ring missing from behind the compressor side bushing, allowing it to walk in the housing.

Detroit remans? No thank you, not for me!

Best advice I could give, is put a CAT in it.
