2nd oil analysis came back, some copper again

227 ppm on 52,000 km changed oil and filters 21 ppm on 11,000 km gone from a part of copper every 229 km to 524 km. I still don't like it. Every single UOA I look at copper is below 1. 1 PPM / 40,000 km or something like that. Only thing I can do is do another analysis around 30k. If copper is still going up at a regular rate, at this point it is becoming a regular wear metal and we can eliminate anything irregular like gaskets or oil cooler. At that point, the engine would probably have to come apart. |

If it's a CAT - it's part of the oil cooler wearing in - they have a little sheet on it avail at CAT dealers. Your PPM don't really scare me that parts per MILLION. She starts hitting 700-1000 then I would get nervous. Any other elements? Lead or Iron? |
Found your other post - I guess it does bear looking into then. Oil cooler is 3 years old - then maybe - what I was talking about usually shows around the 3rd oil change on new CAT engine.

At that point, the engine would probably have to come apart. alan, weren't you do some experimenting on extending oil change intervals, etc? are you changing it based on the results of the analysis? what is your current (and recent past) oil change schedule? try sending a sample to a different company |
allan5oh I've been watching with interest concerning your elevated copper levels. I can't see how any gasket material or contents of an oil cooler could result in a elevated copper count, they are not "wear" points.
Seems you mentioned somewhere that you were using some kind of oil other than commonly used. Might I sudgest that perhaps it has something to do with the formulation of the oil? Sending in a sample of new oil would reveal that if it's so. The only thing I think of that might show up as copper is a defective water pump seal. Usually made of a ceramic material against a stainless or brass wear surface, but that's pushing it. It's more likely to show up as coolant in the oil. |
bearing base material is usually copper, I didnt see the other thread so whats the whole story?

Using shell rotella T, considering switching to synthetic. But if I'm not 100% sure on the engine, there's no point switching to something more expensive.
