super 10 with weird noise
 

any of you have a super 10 tranny?

you would know what i mean when you would split shift....

when you split shift like lets say from 5 to 6...usually when you are on 5 and when you push the shift button up and let go of the gas you would get a weird small grinding noise like it's trying to find 6th gear...but once you get on the gas pedal it would automatically pop right into 6th gear...

well just recently when i'm on 10th, and it's doing it more going down hill...i would let the truck coast while in gear of course but gently on the pedal not enough to get the truck going because of course i'm coasting, it would seem like the tranny is looking for a gear, i don't really know how to put it but that's what its doing...when i'm on the fuel it would stop, i don't recall anything like this at all...had the clutch changed like 70k miles ago...what could be the cause??

i'm afraid that it would all of a sudden just can't find the gear and i would be stranded....

any super 10 owners out there???

Sounds like the synchronizer is bad.

Well, it wouldn't be the clutch, that's out of the picture.

Now I'm not all together familiar with this transmission, but if I understand it, it's a 5 speed and you split every gear using the same driving technique you would use for splitting the gears on a 13 speed.

If that's correct, then I don't think you have synchros as such, either.

When it it's doing this "looking for a gear" thing, is it still in gear? In other words, when you start down the hill, does it come out of gear, look around for a gear, then go back in gear when you hit the fuel?

Are you trying to shift with the jake brake on? That will sometimes cause the air shift unit to miss the gear since the engine speed drops too quickly. The unit will grab the gear when you accelerate again.

Of course if you are rolling down a hill and accelerating you may just need to skip 9th and go directly from 8th to 10th.

I also won't rule out a problem with the air shift unit itself. If the problems continue or get worse you may need to replace the air shift unit or at least some gaskets in it. Good luck.

yes it's still in gear when it's causing that wieird noise, and yes it would stop if i hit the fuel....

After a great deal of thought, I'd say I don't know. And I'm sure about that.

The gears in the splitter box are most likely wearing out. The box is on the rear of the transmission.

Every gear you split that you don't move the shifter on, the splitter gears will grind until the rpms match, then the splitter will complete the shift.

After enough times of this happening the gears will wear down. This is just the way the transmission is designed, and should not be a real expensive or hard repair.

you wouldn't happen to know the price for a new or reman. splitter box???
