Equipment at Swift
I'm headed back to Swift this July/August. Has the company upgraded its equipment recently, or are they still using Volvo tractors :D

Volvo, Freightliner, KW
|
you forgot international's
|
Yep I see Volvo, KW, Freighshaker, and Internationals. I don't see a bad truck really in their fleet they all seem to be in pretty decent shape depending on the driver of course. I started in a 88' Freightliner Cabover with no AC or Radio so I wouldn't complain about a brand new Volvo.

Celadon has a couple of the Lonestars, but they're technically not Celadon's trucks. International 'loaned' them to Celadon for testing purposes. They have the new engines and such. International is responsible for the maintenance on them.
BTW - the Lonestar's are *UGLY* trucks in all white. |
i think they're downright ugly no matter what color they are.

Aha! A brand-new International parked in front of headquarters at Phoenix yard. Excellent recruiting tool, but is this something to be expected?

as far as swifts equipment. I think they've got some of the best trucks (again, based on the driver). But overall, its good equipment. I'm in my 2nd Volvo (new in Feb. 2009) and haven't had any major issue with the trucks. the 2005 Volvo i started with, had 530,000 miles on it...and never once had a major breakdown issue with it. Compare them to Schneider or JB Hunt, and you'll find some REALLY jacked up looking trucks. Orange duck tape, missing bumpers.... i think one thing Swift could do, is cut down on all the different makes of trucks. Go with all Volvo, KW or Freightliner. This will cut down on all the diffferent starters, wiring harness', oil filters, etc. on hand thus cutting down on overhead in all the shops. |
I believe Swift is still running anything that is sloped nosed, and doesn't have a Red Oval. :p

Kev, the problem with sticking to one brand, eventually they could start taking your lunch money without you really knowing it. If a maker gets real comfortable with you and realize your going to stick with them, they will try to gouge you a little bit down the road by charging you more money for the truck than it's actually worth. Look around, make them think they will lose your business by purchasing another brand and watch how that price drops for a new truck.
What your saying isn't wrong in theory, simpler is better all around but maybe someone else has a better truck out there, won't know unless you shop around and try out others. |
Does Swift have APU's on their trucks?

OK, I see it's an International Lonestar, and it's supposed to be some kind of retro thing in the style of the new Mustang or Charger, but I say again, WTF is that monstrosity? That is one freaking hideous truck! Wow! I think I threw up in my mouth a little. (Shows I'm not on the road anymore, or I probably would have seen one by now. Well, I'm trying to remedy that.) |
I don't see many lonestars on the highways in my neck of the woods but I see more and more Prostars (atleast they are not quite as fugly as the lonestars) and cascadias.

I'm in a 2009 International Pro-Star with 312,000 miles...it's clean and drives great. A buddy of mine is in a 2008 Volvo vn 670 and it's decent too.
It's funny, when I pulled into PHX terminal they had all these nice brand-new tractors on display with a big banner beckoning would-be lease/ops to sign-on. Great marketing I gotta say! |
