CHS Transportation

They specialize in bulk transportation of refined fuels, liquid fertilizers, anhydrous ammonia, liquid propane gas, crude oil, asphalt... pretty much if it can fit in tankers they haul it.

So has anyone worked for them? If so how are they?

You tossed a good one out there with that name...so I did the web search thing.

Ok then...CHS Transportation is Cenex. That was interesting to find out. I take it that your asking the question because your hubby has the opportunity to drive for them??
Now..I have never worked for Cenex, but I used to know most of those whom did. Cenex was, until 96, a union outfit (Auburn & Mount Vernon), and it was plenty tough to get on with them. They dropped the trucks working out of Auburn though in 96, which pretty much ended Cenex distribution in the Seattle area.

Have they returned? The guy's I knew that didn't have enough time to retire, drive for Associated Petroleum in Tacoma, Reinhardt Distribution out of Sumner, and a couple made it into the Tosco fleet, before the Phillips Petroleum & ConocoPhillips deal rolled into town.

Sorry I don't know more..but that is all I did know.

Thanks for at least replying, Yeah he interviewed they like him. Union teamsters, but I guess they dont really want to hire former or current teamsters. Husband is not, fresh meat. I guess,

Yeah I googled them too Fortune 500 Co, it says.

Sounds too good to be true so I am not holding my breath. But I want him to get it, He has a job, guy loves him, but not enough money to feed a single person.
Hauling for the same customers as this CHS co, and all the customers have been requesting my husband. He is neat, clean, professional and stays till the work it done right. Go figure.

Ok..so are they doing propane, fuels, and fertalizer out of the North Bend area??

Hmmm...who is it your hubby drives for? Not Schultz Distribution....they paid really really well, the last I knew.

Trukrswyfe 02-25-2008 02:03 PM

Sorry no. He is hauling for a mama and papa's farm. He is new to tankers and doubles even though he has all endorsements.
The customers just turned out to be similiar, the ag runs bricks cane and fertilizer. Ever haul that bricks cane? H says it is some messy chit.

Orangetxguy 02-25-2008 03:30 PM

I haven't even heard of "bricks cane" before. Have no clue what it is.

I wish your Hubby luck with his application at CHS. Like I said earlier..Cenex used to be a pretty decent outfit. Tough to get a job from, because nobody ever left.

If he doesn't have any immediate luck with them, or of they tell him to get a couple years experience pulling tanker, here are a couple outfits he should get in touch with. Both train "new" tanker drivers, and both are pretty decent.

Reinhard Petroleum; http://www.reinhardpetroleum.com/transportation.html

I know the owner Tony...and I also knew his Dad..Tony SR. I remember when Reinhard was a one truck operation, and Tony was number 2 driver on the truck. His dad never let him become number one on anything until senior passed. When that happened Reinhard was a 2 truck operation, and Tony was just finishing school. Long time ago. Now they are far bigger than Senior would have ever imagined. LOL...I bet he has been laying in his grave going..."damn..I didn't think the kid had it in him!!!!"

Harris Transportation would be the other; http://www.htc-llc.com/Default.aspx

I don't know the Harris' personally, but I do know a lot of what are now the "Senior" drivers. I know the guy credited with taking the picture that is on the home page of their website. I worked with him for 4 years off and on(he tended to change jobs a lot).

Harris or reinhard either one, would be decent work for the Hubby...and he will make a decent living. Last I knew the both paid with in 25 cents per hour of each other. They are both at about $19.45/hr to start.

Thanks Stan,

You are very helpful. I will look into these companys. He isn't a job hopper, so unless he sees himself with any of these people full a long time, he is staying put. I read him your response the first time when I asked about it. Where you gave me a history of Cenex and the workers you knew and then ended it with..." Sorry that's all I know"

He seemed to think you knew a whole lot. Thanks again! The job sounded good, too good to be true, I don't like the idea of them going out of business then changing names like that... Seems a little shady but will see. Hopefully he can run into a current worker to get the full scoop, I want him to be able to stay with the company as long as possible.

Major companies...especially companies like Cenex, close and re-open operating facilities all the time. Cenex was a "Co-Operative" that depended on farmers for their revenue, just as rural electric companies and rural phone companies used to depend on farmers and ranchers. Times change.

By changing their name to CHS, it seems that cenex has moved up from the "Co-Op" stage, and is now a full fledged company. As such they are a much more stable company witha broader customer base.

As for working for those other companies...both know and understand that the men & women they hire may well leave them for employment at companies such as BP, CHS, Chevron.. are all major companies, with better benefits to offer. Yes, Reinhard & Harris are good companies and both are larger now, than what they were just 15 years ago. They still do not offer what Chevron or BP have to offer.

I hear they pay 33cpm and $17 per hour for load/unload time/short runs.
They prefer to train the driver (in tanker ops) and may allow you to take the truck home in certain situations (more efficient dispatch) and home most every night.
not sure if they pay overtime.

I came across this thread and although it is old, thought I could add to it.
I went to work for them back in 1998, as a driver, still CENEX in those days, they merged with Harvest States CO OP, changed name to CENEX/HARVESTSTATES and became much larger and were going world wide and figured the name was to long and not just for farmers alone any more, so changed the name to just the initials CHS, as they were expanding into many different products. I was full time hauling asphalt, crude, gas, water, propane, anhydrous anomia to SD, ND, WYO, MT,ID, WASH, CANADA where ever they had loads going to or from. In the winter time we hauled propane from where ever we could get product Canada, Mt, Co, Ks, and hauled it as fast as the trucks would go to the vineyards of Washington to keep the vines from freezing. When I retired in 2000 at age 62, being union I could only work 40 hrs per month so full time drivers got the most hrs, and I could still be part time under the Gov. top pay of $10,000per yr. when I turned 65 I went full/part time and worked as many hrs. as allowed per day. got paid the going company wage which was worked out thru the union. plus overtime. in states with right to work laws the drivers there got the going wage mandated by the state which was not a fair wage in my opinion!!! The company started combining the work force and bringing trucks to one location when it worked out to make repairs our self today rather than pay outside costs, therefore the drivers went further and when out of hours got a room for the night at company expense. They were always fair to me in my working with CHS, seldom had pay problems, there is always a time when something would go wrong but seldom. When I retired in 2010 the pay was around $18 per hr. area haven't heard what the latest is.

It seem that they specializing a lot of stuff in that transportation company in Finland at http://www.nybrok.fi/ they are only giving logistic services but they are the leading transport service in that country which give the past and reliable service to many of their customer and all of their driver are really professional and following all the rules for the sake of safety.
