RECRUITERS: WANT TO FIND PLENTY OF DRIVERS---EASILY????
 

It's real simple and everyone knows it...NO ONE WANTS TO GET INTO TRUCK DRIVING DUE TO LIFESTYLE!!! Out 7 days for 24/7 then ONE lousy day off?? Out 14 days then TWO lousy days off??? What any sensible human would want is to make less money (while still doing pretty good) .. have the benefits..AND HAVE MORE TIME OFF FOR HOME AND FOR HAVING A BIT OF A LIFE!!! JB HUNT has a program.. 2 days off for ea. 7 days out....ie. OUT 14 DAYS--HOME 4-DAYS....and if you don't take all 4-days you can save them for the future!! You can accumulate a maximum of 30 days in the "bank". The only problem wih this JB HUNT seemingly good home time policy is that it is BULL!!! If you live and work out of S. Calif..this policy DOES NO0T APPLY!!! If every company had a decent home time policy they woulkd have plenty of drivers....BUT INSTEAD THEY DEAL WITH THE DRIVER SHORTAGE BY WORKING THE DRIVERS THEY DO HAVE TO DEATH AND THEN WONDER WHY THE DRIVER TURNOVER!! OF COURSE..THE DRIVER TURNOVER IUS GOOD BECAUSE A DRIVER NEVER GETS FULLY VESTED IN THEIR 401-K PROGRAM SO THE COMPANY SAVE MONEY BY NEVER HAVING TO PAY OFF THE BENEFIT.

In the many many years I recruited for JB, I never had ONE driver who opted for the 14 days on 4 days off option. Two reasons. First, drivers dont want to slipseat. And 2nd, more days off means that you have 2 more days when you arent making money. Why dont you do one of those 7 days on 7 days off programs companies have if being home more is more important to you than making money. Or better yet, since you know a better way to run a company than the 100s of OTR companies out there that do the 14 and 2 OTR, why dont you start your own company and give drivers more time off.

I wonder where he got the idea that recruiters make company policy like time off?

I think you're all members of a secret club that plays poker using drivers for "chips"....

lol...that would be fun. I do play poker with a bunch of other recruiters. Next time I have a good hand Im going to bet one of my drivers.

Where do these "1 hit" wonders come from...They come to the forum(s), light a firecracker, and run. You never see them come back and reply. Meanwhile we start posting replies back and forth, topic is 10 pages long and no signs of the OP.

BTW, I have seen more "1 hit wonders" for JB than against. The best thing I can recommend to those who have a complaint is to post it once, then "let it go". Past one time, and no-one cares. Maybe the OP feels the same. :wink:

The trick to finding drivers and keeping drivers is simple (imho)

Since the truck is basically their 'home away from home'

Get off the drivers backs with 'Policy' and let them take their pets

and what not along with them...let it actually be their home on wheels.

These companies that spray all this 'Family' atmosphere and 'we care'

is nothing but crap aimed at gullible people who are swayed by words

and imagery.

Im not in trucking for the money ya know...cause there is'nt a whole lot of that...seems to be just a way to get by...its an odd industry

Sure, I understand that. But most companies have no-pet policies in place for a variety of reasons, all of them legit.

Of all the ones I have talked to they just state its not allowed...Never had one explain as to exactly why ...

I pull for PGT Trucking and they've been very flexible for me when the situation called for it.

For instance: Last week my Dad found out he has cancer. Monday he was told there was not much they coud do and I was told Monday NIGHT after the office in B'ham was closed for the day.

I mentioned this news to another B'ham driver in Laredo Monday night who evidently passed my news on to dispatch Tuesday morning.

When my load info came across the sat. Tuesday morning I noticed a "note" that it didn't have to deliver till NEXT Monday.

When I called and asked about the delay in delivery I was told "We heard about your Dad and have already discussed the matter and contacted the customer to change the delivery date...but you CAN deliver early if you want. We just thought you MAY be needed at home for a few days. It's up to you".

I only mentioned it to another driver in conversation and NEVER asked for any special treatment.

There ARE companies out there that believe in "family first".

You just have to look.

Some of the reasons for no-pet policies?

Liability, for one. The stories of accidents happening because of a free roaming truck pet that distracted a driver, are out there.

Liability continues with possible pet bites. If Patrolman Joe pulls over your truck and gets his face bitten off by your 120 pound Rottweiller, the company might as well hand over a signed check for him to fill in the amount.

Then there's the equipment, itself. Driving pet owners are in a small minority. Your dog or cat or ferret or whatever you have in your truck might not be an issue for you. But when you move out of that truck and the next driver moves in, what happens if that driver has a severe allergy? Doesn't matter how much you clean a pet truck, you'll never get it clean enough.

Let's not forget customers. There are a lot of customers out there that will refuse entrance into a plant to a driver with a pet in the truck. I've talked to several drivers in the past with stories about how their pet was crated and the company would still not let them on the grounds unless they left the crated pet outside company grounds. The logistical nightmare resulting from that scenario isn't a pretty one.

I'm all for pets. I grew up with Black Labs, have had cats and for many years, aquariums. I'm an animal lover, through and through, particularly since I think they're worth more than a large segment of humanity today. But I happen to agree with policies restricting pets in a work vehicle.

In all the years ive been recruiting, Ive maybe lost a total of 15 drivers because of "no pet" policies. That tends to make me believe it isnt that much of an issue. Now that recruit for a few companies that allow pets, I bet a lose just as many drivers because they refuse to drive a truck that had pets in it before them because of allergies.

I agree with twilight. All those reasons are legit. The main one is the customer. Back when I used to work for JB, at one time they allowed pets. They dont anymore, this is what happened. One of JBs major customers was complaining about drivers with pets. It seems the drivers were letting their pets poop on their property. The customer complained, corporate warned the drivers. The drivers didnt stop letting their pets poop on the customers property. The customer complained again, pretty much saying that JB was about to lose the account. BAMMO, no pet policy.

We can throw neglect in there as well. It probably doesn't happen a lot, but it does happen and one instance of it is one too many.

We had a female driver a number of years ago that had a cat. She left the cat in the truck one hot day, without idling it. Before the cat died of heat stroke, it had effectively destroyed the interior of the truck trying to get out. Horrible situation.
