Aaaaaaah man! He shoulda held it one more mile!!! The EB rest area was just up the road. I had just gotten going after stopping at a RA for the same exact thing!!

Glad he was ok. Terrible thing to experience I am sure!!!

Oh yeah.. I haven't ever laid one over...but...I have had that sliding to the side feeling more than once!!! I always seem to get it stopped, by planting both feet firmly on the floorboards...shutting my eyelids as tightly as possible, and saying " Please stop..please please please stop!!!"
So far...God has always been on my side!!!

Slidng backwards, down a hill, and across oncoming traffic...while your chains are shredding apart because you are holding the brake against the firewall, is the absolute worst feeling.

I thought tankers would pay much better than the last post. For all the danger and responsibility.

Orangetxguy 04-13-2008 01:49 PM

Like everything else...the tanker industry is being hit hard by economic conditions...we are the first to see a slow down...but will be the first to see the turn as well.

CY you young pup...how's things???

Tankers do pay "much better".....at least the "chemical tankers" do. Food grade for the "most part" pays much like box and reefer.....mainly mileage pay....with the exception of "Carry Transit".

There is no more, I repeat..NO MORE danger in pulling a tanker than a box or reefer, or flatbed for that matter. Its the driver not the tank that can be "dangerous". Responsibility? All jobs have responsibilities, and while maybe we have a little more of it than some.... I can't really see that much. I pull strictly "chemicals"....and often times...the only real responsibility I have is to move the load safely from point A to point B. My responsibilities when pulling hazmat loads are the same as when I pulled a van with hazmat... except that now...I have probably less chance of exposure to the hazardous materials than before.

Granted, I sometimes have to offload hazardous materials, but then... my paycheck reflects it...even when offloading non-hazmat. Like a paycheck for a week with 2668 miles....that was $1416.61....which amounts to 53 cents per mile. It all depends on variables....but I make much more now than I did pulling a van.

Dangerous? No....not at all. Level of responsibility? About the same overall....at least to me. 8)

   Responsibility...is relative. We have our responsibilities, and they probably exceed the normal "box or reefer" drivers concerns....but its mainly in the realm of "Safety Protocols". Overpaid? Hardly. I think we are paid "reasonably"....though it could be better. All things considered....its rather good.

The difference between us and others....like box and reefer haulers as well as skateboarders....is the fact that we actually get paid for our time. Our employers realize that our time and the truck's time has value...so we are compensated for the time. While you might spend 12 hours sitting waiting to get loaded or unloaded....and receive absolutely nothing for your time or trouble....we start our time the minute we hit the property, and it doesn't end until we leave. If you think you're not good enough to get paid for your time or efforts....thats entirely up to you. Frankly, I place a value on my time, efforts and knowledge, and I do expect to get compensated for them. Me, I definitely prefer the way we get compensated......

Layover Pay (after 24 hours):
$70-90 (depending on experience), then after twenty-four hours $40 motel allowance.

Canada Border Crossing Delay Pay (after 2 hours):
$20, then $10 each additional hour.

Funeral Pay:
$40/day for three days for funeral of family member.

Training Pay:

Inexperienced (Need training): $0 for 14 days of Pre-hire training, $350/week for up to four weeks,, plus $130 two-day training.

And how is that bad compared to a regular freight-hauler who isn't compensated for anything other than holding the steering wheel and putting miles behind him/her?

Allow me to display "Exhibit A" for Pumpkin...

Loading/Unloading/Detention Pay:
$25 per live load/unload, then $10/hour after 3 hours.

So when a driver does a low-ball figure of only 200 loads/unloads total annually and, pessimistically only 50% are only live load/unload, that said driver only made an additional $2,500 before figuring in any extra delay time. Nope not smart at all...

Tank Wash Pay:
$20

How much does a reefer driver receive getting his/her trailer washed out when necessary for the next load? Last time I checked it was $0.....

Short-Haul Pay (in addition to mileage and accessory pay):
0-100 miles: $40
101-200 miles: $20
201-300 miles: $10

Every little bit adds up!

Holiday Pay:
$40/day for six major holidays.

Beats not getting paid anything at all.

Funeral Pay:
$40/day for three days for funeral of family member.

How many general freight haulers get paid for this? Seems not many that I can recall. True, some of SNI's pay rates may be low but, it's not as bad as CTL's, and even they (CTL) get paid for much of the stuff they do. Though they are deifnitely a stepping stone to better companies.

Now if you wanna dog on pay scales, we can talk about the "easy" food-grade all day long (Bynum, Caledonia, Indian River/North American Tank Lines, Oakley, Opies, and Ruan.) You know, low to mid thirties for mileage rate and the potential (and most likely, the need) to run your azz off week in, week out and get all the miles you can handle and then some.........

But still, even with knowing now what I do about "easy" food-grade after running it for a little more than three years, there is without a doubt in my mind that there is no easier O.T.R. driving position out here than that. No driver loading or unloading, just safely transport it from Point A to Point B (more on this below). And many of the deliveries are first come, first serve. Yes, the more productive drivers are the ones who hustle to get to the receiver asap and keep moving. If you wanna take your time and lounge around you can do that as well and still get great miles. And if you play your cards right, you can get plenty of home time, miles, and free time out on the road. It just sucks due to the low mileage pay though and lack of accessory pay.

Now talk of food-grade companies where the driver handles much of the unloading and it's a whole different ballgame, since they are compensated for their time as well just as chemical tank companies (Carry Transit, Foodliner, L.C.L., and Transport Service Company to name a few).

Now back to the above-mentioned note... This is why I enjoy my current position on the dedicated account I am on for Superior (albeit as an O/O). It is a combination of the best of everything I have personally wanted and had with food-grade, though with much better pay, benefits, and load scheduling. I am truly able to take off as much time as I desire, all of my assignments are on pre-loaded tankers, and when I get to the receiver they unload it (provided it's Huntsville, AL, or Bristol, VA). Then a simple turn around back to either the plant or the yard in Indiana, and repeat cycle. Do three loads a week, get through the house going and coming each way, then spend the weekend off with my soon-to-be wife and step daughter. Run that cycle for about three to three-and-a-half weeks, then bounce down to Florida and visit my son for a week minimum. It works for me.

Which btw, on my way home to Indiana now and dropping this dirty tank, then taking off 'til at least Tuesday morning. :D I have a very important date I simply cannot miss, or Baby Bullseye will have my azz in a sling!!!

Cyanide,
Where is the Superior yard in Indiana? Also, I looked up Demotte. Pretty darn close to Roselawn? LOL 8)

[quote="Cyanide"]Evinrude wrote:[quote]I am glad you get paid for your work..and thats the way it should be. But look at pumpkin for example:

SCHNEIDER NATIONAL

Breakdown Pay (after 24 hours):
$70-90 (depending on experience), then after eight hours $40 allowance for hotel.

Layover Pay (after 24 hours):
$70-90 (depending on experience), then after twenty-four hours $40 motel allowance.

Canada Border Crossing Delay Pay (after 2 hours):
$20, then $10 each additional hour.

Holiday Pay:
$40/day for six major holidays.

We have the yard that I run out of in Westville, IN (I/C only, dedicated account), and also yards in Kankakee, IL and Markham, IL. Our sister company Carry Transit has a yard in Lafayette, IN as well. Hope that helps...

Evinrude.... You found a freight-hauling company that pays rather well. However, ALL chemical tank companies pay their drivers for their time and work (some obviously better than others) in addition to mileage pay. How many dry van and refrigerated carriers that aren't either Union and/or LTL can you say that about in North America? Just a simple question...

My opinion they don't pay well. Short trips they don't pay what they say. I am quiting before summer.

Thanks for the update and putting all that back up; very timely for me and saves a lot of internet hunting.

Superior pay

Superior Pay varies so much from Terminal to Terminal. The $0.415 and $0.34 are the only firm numbers - everything else seems to be terminal specific and somewhat discretionary.

Also insurance went up. Still relatively inexpensive compaired to the competition.

How do you figure?

Also Geargrinder is correct. Mainers dont get those kind of rates...

True enough, miles wise, but the rest of the stuff tends to be "terminal specific" and that is more than likely driven by the cost of living in those areas.....

I don't think anyone is really happy about it....but then...at least we have it.

As compared to some of the low paying food grade outfits? Maybe, .....BUT... In the chemical world Schneider is at the lower end of the pay scale....

But, I can't figure if Schneider is hiring to replace the slaughtered flock, or to fill the empty Superior trucks. It seems we are losing drivers, and the drivers that are staying are getting fewer and fewer miles. Yet the Schneider and QC are hiring.

I often wondered if Superior had a Sales Department. Maybe Superior's idea of Sales is having the Terminal Dispatchers waiting for phone calls to see if we have any trucks available.

Schneider has some big gig going on tomorrow. I gotta go and at least hear what they have to say. All I hear at Superior is sorry, no freight.

One thing Superior has going for it - it's a lot more fun and cheaper to be parked at home instead of a TA.

Its because huge companies like Dow are TELLING QC what to bid. Its why Maine lost the account, AKA the life blood of that terminal. Something is wrong when Superior can deliver a ****load more product in one pop then QC but they still get the account. Hmmmmm...

Maybe so, but at least they're running making money while most of the rest of us are sitting around making squat. If it keeps getting worse and doesn't improve, I have no problem trading $0 a week for $800+ a week at one of those scumbag outfits if necessary. Been there, done that, and damn sure know how to do it again if need be to take care of my family and obligations!

Can't argue with that!

What blows is some drivers still getting 2K + a week, and others getting less than a 1000 miles. I remember Mike and Jack at orientation saying this would never happen at Superior - but I see it daily and it has a tendency to tick me off!

I thought DOW was lost because the first load in the contract was screwed up - wrong product, connected to the wrong pipe. Something like that.

The bad news, in the words of Springsteen; "Foreman says these jobs are going boys and they ain't coming back to your hometown"

Exactly brother! I'll admit that we're keeping steady at Kankakee but nothing near as good as it could be or rather was a few months ago. Though lately here they've been keeping me busy doing local deliveries next door at Cognis if nothing else. But it would be nice to get back out to the open road again soon on a consistent basis. Though like I said earlier, if things keep going downhill I'll be back to the old routine quickly. Believe me when I say I don't want to, but if that's what it takes then I will do what I must. I love time off and all, but I love making $$$ too!

Just sucks when I personally know of three individuals (two are very close friends) who are all still plugging away, business as usual with one particular cheap, Florida-based company (that I could end up at). All are averaging consistent 3,000+ miles a week. Two running primarily short to medium length Midwest milk loads while the third runs the long-distance stuff just as I did at Aartman years ago. Also, all three are very seasoned, experienced drivers who take the bad with the good, they go where the freight goes, and don't b**** and moan when something doesn't go their way.

What's funny is that with as many drivers we seem to have on the verge of leaving here because of little to no work, I still run across knuckleheads that will complain about getting a load all because it's going to a less-than-desirable destination! Hell I say give it to the guy who will be thankful to get it and not gripe!!! If someone doesn't wanna take a load somewhere because of the destination then fine, send their sorry azz home and stay put a few days and see how much stuff gets paid then...

......Sorry my young son....I could not but help it.....the last post that is..... while one can not argue with your twisted logic....because there just happens to be some validity to it....and yes one must do what one must do to cover and protect one's most precious.....

Lets all face it....the economy "sucks" and things may get worse before they get better, and while I am personally disinclined to make a change in employers....I can truly understand that anyone who has a firm handle on a job that will actually produce an income....will move that way. For "tanker guys and gals"....if all else fails.....food grade tankers offer a safe haven....if for no other reason than the fact that "food" continues to be consumed, while base chemicals are not....

One must protect their home and family, above and beyond all else!
