Black Horse Carriers

Are there are any current or former drivers who are acquainted with this company?

Any comments or info will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You.

Useless 09-12-2007 02:22 PM

Never heard of them.

Personally, I am left to wonder why they want to restrict their market to hauling Black Horses; do Black Horses bring more revenue than hauling white of brown horses??

This sounds like Reverse Discrimination to me!!

Jackrabbit379 09-13-2007 03:11 AM

Yeah, Useless, black horses bring more money, and most wranglers like them better. Especially, for breeding. :P

The words "horses, money, wranglers and breeding" in close proximity doesn't sound like a good thing. BOL

Jackrabbit379 09-13-2007 07:06 AM

No it doesnt, Sealord. :P

I know they require 3 years OTR and have all dedicated freight if that helps .

mudpuddle 09-14-2007 01:57 PM

Does that mean the black horses are "dedicated" to breeding?

doesn't Death (Grim Reaper) ride on a Black horse????

I drove for Black Horse Carriers from February until July of this year. They aren't a bad company, but you will likely put in A LOT of hours. I drove on the PCA account and usually bumped my 70 each week. The Aldi drivers (grocery account) put in just as many hours, but they ran night shift. I believe Aldi is their bread and butter at each of their terminals. I never had a problem with pay as they were very accurate, and I was treated fairly well while I was with them.

I left for 2 reasons. One was that I was offered a position one mile from the house as opposed to the 41 miles I was commuting to Black Horse. The other was because they are a slip-seat company and I like to have my own assigned truck that I can set up to my comfort (CB, tools, etc)

For the most part the equipment is good and well maintained. They run strictly Feightliner Columbias leased from Ryder so they aren't old. Most of the trucks on our fleet were 2007's with the Freightliner automatic Smart Shift. When I left they were updating the PCA fleet with BRAND NEW air-ride trailers which were nice.

All in all a decent company and I would still be there if I lived closer and they didn't slip-seat.

What's the PCA account ? And how many miles did you run weekly ? Did you get paid by the mile or trip ? Thanks

PCA stands for Packaging Corporation of America and we hauled corrugated boxes. I averaged around 1500-1800 miles per week and we were paid on a combination of mileage+stop+detention+fueling. The breakdown of pay was a little bit complicated since mileage was on a sliding scale, but I was grossing around $900 per week. Aldi drivers did a little bit better.

Bumping your 70 and grossing $900/week? Doesn't sound good at all.

~$12.86/HR is what it comes out to. My last job we had guys that were paid $900.00/wk salary. Depending on what route they were on(extra board drivers). Some weeks they made a decent hourly wage and some weeks it sucked for them. I can work a nice easy 54 hour week and bump over a grand :D and I am at the bottom of the pay scale right now.

I always thought it was " Death rides a Pale Horse ".

Well I don't have any jokes about the four horsemen, but I do work for Black Horse Carriers out of their Phoenix terminal. Our main account is the Michael Lewis Company. I get .40 per mile off my odometer and $30.00 a drop. I run between 3000 and 4200 miles a week, (I hope we keep the reset). I leave out on Tuesday and get back in Saturday night. This gives me a gross pay of between $1400.00 and $1800.00 a week depending on stops and where I run. We have health, vision, dental, disability insurance, 401K, vacation, and holiday pay. I drive a 2007 Century mid-liner with auto-shift and a 500 Detroit. And all of our trailers are air ride. Anything else you would like to know.

Yeah, How do you log 4200 miles in 5 days!

pcmartin 09-26-2007 01:31 PM

I get back in Saturday night and "log" in Sunday morning. I guess I should do a 10 hour rest 5.25 hours from home but, I just can't see it. After 32 accident free years I think I'm a better judge of when I'm tired than Washington.

Sounds like better pay then 900 a week . I guess out west you can log 70 mph in most states .

zipy46 09-27-2007 06:13 AM

It may not apply to all but they are adjusting the per diem to match actual truck times.

In other words if you 'ran out of hours' yet still scooted your week foward
to appear legal on the logs the payroll people cannot legally pay
the per diem for those 'imaginary days'.

Company I drive for sent out a message to the drives some weeks back
pertaining to this new standard.

( Big bro reaching out to keep people honest I suppose.. )

pcmartin 09-27-2007 03:09 PM

I think per diem is a rip off. It saves the company money on their income and ss taxes, while shorting your future ss payments.

After reading this, I wish I'd have stuck it out longer.

I lived in Phoenix for five years and would love to move back. I knew about them having Phoenix operations, but the folks at Center Valley were vague about the accounts out there, and a good friend who drives for First Fleet out there thought they ran flatbeds.

Go figure.

pcmartin 09-30-2007 05:03 PM

Voyager; They do have one account that is flatbed. I don't run that account and most of those trucks are based at the customers location so I never really think about them. It's all local work so they are home every night and I think they get paid around $16.00 per hour, but I'm not sure since it has nothing to do with me.

bosscityboy19 07-30-2013 12:47 AM

how fast
