Default Layover Pay

Talked to some friends @ KLLM today. Started a new layover pay program. If unloaded by noon and not reloaded are repositioned 200 miles b4 midnight $50. Then $100 for each day after that if you have not been moved or reloaded by midnight.

So lemme get this straight: noon to midnight is 12 hours and you get 50 bucks, right? $50.00 / 12 hours = $4.16 per hour. Then $100.00/day after 24 hours. Take 10 out for the DOT break and that's $100.00 / 14 hours = $7.14/hour. And this is their new and improved layover plan?

No wonder these companies can't find any drivers.

Its a lot better than most of the other huge carriers. $4.16/hr for sitting in the truck aintoo bad, especiall when the usual rate is 50 AFTER 24 hrs empty.

It still sucks, but its a step in the right direction 8)

Well, I agree with BanditsCousin. At least they are offering something for the same day that you unload, the $50 and are double of what most of the other big carriers are offering for a 24 hr layover. At least they are trying I guess you could say.

If you want you, can always work at McDonalds.

Nah, I'd rather drive truck and get paid over $22.00/hr to sit.

It just amazes me that drivers high-five each other over 4 bucks an hour and penny raises. Christ, that's not even minimum wage! No wonder the industry's in the mess it is.

At best its a step in the right direction, but there is alot left to be corrected in the industry.

I prefer the way I get paid.... as a tanker yanker, but $22 an hour would be even better.... But jobs like that are like chickens with lips where I come from and can't relocate..... Really can't.

Default Cold Frosty Mug....

CFM...I think we are fighting a losing battle against free time. Wow, 4 bucks an hour to waste your life away. Start saving for that vacation house. I get paid for each and every hour, time and a half after 8, double time after 12. Base wage $25.75 an hour (and I run line). ALL drivers should be on the clock. Period. Pay for ALL time worked, NO freebies.

There are very good paying OTR jobs, unlike what some people will tell you!! They are however not with the large carriers, and the new drivers must be aware of this, life will most likely suck for them until they have the experience and a work ethic!

All drivers should NOT be on the clock. many should. That would do away with o/o's

Edit: Quit sounding like old ladies bickering over this pay plan. Bicker about the companies that don't pay ANYTHING for the first 24 hrs, then pay only $50 for the 24hrs after the initial 24hrs spent sitting.

Of course, never sitting is ideal 8)

Yes it is a step in the right direction. Any sort of an increase is a plus.

I'm not gonna say that all layovers are because of this, but a lot of times a driver is layed over because the made a late delivery or something that threw everything off schedule. Now, the load that was planned for them is gone so they have to sit and wait for another one. Bottom line is no one wants to sit and the company doesn't want you sitting either. They're not making a whole lot of money by having you sit idling in a truck stop for 2 days burning up their fuel.

Comparing local to OTR is apples and oranges. Sure if you are paid by the hour and you get hung out by no fault of your own you should be paid regardless. However, I'm sure if you didn't make your drop because you overslept or you screwed around in a truck stop, UPS would probably put up a fight about paying you also.

It seems that some people have nothing better to do than tell others how good they have it and try to make fun of how screwed OTR drivers are. I can just imagine the conversation in that household, "Hey, how about we go spend some time in that vacation house that you paid for by running local?" "Can't right now honey, gotta get on here and tell these guys how stupid they are and how much better my job is than their job!"
