PAB don't worry about missing a few transmissions there have been so many over the years!!!

I think Sanchez can remember when GMC introduced the straight 6 speed and the straight 7 speed. The 7 speed was not too bad but the 6 was a pain in the ass!!!

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the Eaton gem the 6 speed Road Ranger. Now there was a prize transmission I would rather drive a Super 10 before I'd get in another Ford L-9000 with the 6 speed Road Ranger.
This transmission was so bad the truck didn't get up to a decent road speed until the transmission was in 5th on the high side!!!

Lets see straight 7 speed. Old old PAM cabovers. Now on to 6 speed old GMC UPS truck with a air clutch. Dont forget the mack straight 5 now. Or the 2 stick mack. Not unlike the 5x4 but the second stick was just high - low and reverse.

The Mack 5 speed Maxitorque it only worked in the Mack although a mechanic I know tried to tie one to a screaming 238 Detroit with very, very little success!!!

The mack 12spd was a great tranny, with the flip of the switch you could run thru all 5 gears in reverse.

I ran a 54' White with a 220 and a 5x4, and a 72' pete with a 6x4.

Almost went to work for an outfit that ran 13x4's.

The Mack twelve speed was fun all 5 gears in reverse well it was fun in till I backed into the paver going a little to fast.

I see quite a few older beat up looking R model Mack trash/roll off trucks around my area. I've asked a few of the drivers what trans they had and most said 5 speed. Are those trannys synchro'd and do they still use a high/low range selector?

Mackman 12-29-2005 10:02 AM

Its a straight 5 speed and you have to double clutch it . That tranny i think is the worst i have ever driven it sifts at real low rpms. So if your pulling a hill and your in 3rd the motor is screaming but when you go to 4th you have to let the rpms drop so much it dogs when you grab it. you cant win with that thing.

Yooper i know what you mean about them so called jake brakes them things are say about use less. We had a 87 r model with one of them and that thing sucked if it wasn't for the little bit of noise it made i would have never used it. :P

wot i life 03-01-2006 06:44 AM

straight four over four with splitter(16 speed) used to like daf range change box but don,t do them anymore as prone to snap linkages, BOY!! could you move with that gear box. beat small vans away from traffic lights if you went for it
