What kind of radio do you have in your truck?

This is partially a continuance to RadioRay's DAC Board posting about the 10 Meter Band and Export Radios. The poll is to survey how many of us have radios of this nature or even operate out of band. Don't be shy!

I have a Cobra 200 all "done" up but I'm selling it because it's a hassle to hardwire it to the battery. Next up is an RCI 2950

Hat Rak 07-20-2007 05:22 PM

Looks like a nice Ranger you're looking at. The one thing it doesn't cover on 10 Meters is the FM subband above 29,700 kHz. I'm using a Yaesu FT-857D to cover the ham bands from 160 Meters through 6 M (been hearing listening mostly to 40M and 20M). The 2 Galaxy's, one on 19, the other on 38 LSB, I have are hardly even turned up, just at the threshold of hearing in case I hear the keywords "smokey," "brakecheck," or "chickencoops."

Ah yes the FT-857D great mobile radio beats the crap out of the Icom 706 MK II....

Useless 07-20-2007 07:47 PM

None of the above; I'm a cheapskate.

I just use two tin cans with a long string between them. Cheap, but offers very poor reception!!

Twilight Flyer 07-20-2007 09:21 PM

Shoot. Why spring for the bean cans and string? Just yell. ;)

Useless 07-20-2007 10:43 PM

God, I hope that "Radio Ray" doesn't get wind of this thread!! There will be no shutting him up then!! :P

tin cans are not authorized for use by amateur radio operators. you will be getting a letter from the fcc and a huge fine, you will also have your cans confiscated and subject your company to a fine, all this, just because you didnt bother to get a tin can license. moral.. GET A TIN CAN LICENSE OR STAY OFF THE TIN CAN FREQUENCY!!!!

Malaki86 07-21-2007 12:20 AM

I don't have any of the above. I have a Galaxy 949 that is pushed beyond stock. However, I stay on chan 19. Of course, the thing is normally turned down all the way so I can listen to my Opie & Anthony/Ron & Fez throughout the day without interruption.

Ridge Runner 07-21-2007 12:42 PM

I just project my thoughts to other drivers ( Coast To Coast ). Do I need a license for that?

typical truck driver. just wont play by the rules! when you are in prison surrounded by murderers and rapists and other such people who wont associate with a low life tincanner, we will see who is laughing then.

Collard Greens 07-22-2007 04:02 PM

I have a shoebox with a wire coat hanger in te center of the top. Best receive and transmit in the cb world.

silvan 07-22-2007 09:20 PM

So far I still have a cheapass Cobra 19 that was in the truck when I got in it. I keep meaning to buy a real radio, but the Cobra 19 does the job, and I'm a cheap bastard when you get down to it.

The white noise is starting to drive me nuts though. I keep hearing things in the background radiation of random noise, and I've had to change the ringtone on my phone five times in four months to counteract this problem. I really need to quit being such a cheapskate and pry open my wallet to buy a real radio with a noise cancellation filter on it.

If it has big finals and puts out 192 terawatts, all the better, but I really can't bring myself to care about this, as much as I want to be a real supertrucker.

Mackman 08-09-2007 07:09 AM

Jackrabbit379 08-09-2007 05:23 PM

Cool, good to hear you're getting a good skip with it. Yea, it scares me when I'm side by side with another truck and the needle is slamming +60 over S9. Makes me jump right out of my seat! Be safe out there and enjoy the heat.

markthetrucker 01-20-2008 07:39 AM

RCI 2970 Bad a$$ radio with co-phased wilson 2000's and rewired entire system! talked straight line over 60 miles in Arizona one night. Skip is crazy distance from Chicago to all southern states, Seattle to SF and El Paso!

Double L 01-20-2008 08:10 AM

As of right now I got a Cobra 29 with a bargan air cooled antenna I think it is. That is going in my pick up but I'd like to eventually get two Galaxy 33's and two Wilson 2000's. One for the pick up and the other for my rig whenever I get my CDL and a job driving this summer!

Useless 01-21-2008 11:24 PM

Actually, I don't need a radio; the voices in my head can hear me just fine without one, and God gives me the bear reports.
