Which kind of Tractor should I buy?

Ok, which kind? I am going to get what I want in the end anyway, but I thought this might be fun.

I am NOT going to even consider a Kenworth or a Pete. And if you suggest a Volvo, I am going to get Bush Bunny to hunt you down and tear your carrots out by the roots.

Your choices on your poll should read, Freightliner, Freightliner, International, Freightliner, since they own 3 of the 4 you listed. :P :P :P

My choices in order of preference so far are as follows.

1. International. He is two doors away.

2. Freightliner. He is two blocks away.

3. Western Star and Sterling. they are six blocks away.

I would probably consdier Volvo, if they where one door away.

Kenworth is right across the street, but due to their high dollar cost, they might as well be on Mars.

I've driven Internationals and liked them. Can be a bit noisy and may have air blowing through in inconvenient places, but performed well. Have a Freightliner, and it's the first DODGE product I've kept for more than a year. I'd rather have a slightly lower roof than this condo. Never mind what might happen to the trailer, one low overpass and I've got a "convertable".
Never tried a Sterling, but the one Volvo I test drove... Never do that again. As for a Western Star... Well, they're still supposed to be the "luxioury" line, but I don't know about them either.

Just let me know which ones give you problems Rocky, I'll take care of them for ya.

Okay, I picked the International .... why? Freightshaker and Westernshaker are the same why pay more for the Westernshaker same truck.

Since KW wasn't an option...something about price  guess Canadians don't know how to negotiate a price.

But as you said Rocky pick the one you want and where you be most happy with the service from. No, sorry not coming to work on your truck too! 8)

MACK 02-22-2006 02:56 PM

I voted for Intrnational but what you really need is a Rawhide Mack.

at end of day mate, you have to consider A) your budget, B)work that will be undertaken by truck C) terrain likely to be covered. pointless splahing out over your budget buying some monster bhp unit if your only going be doing distrubution centre stuff on mainly flat areas(no mountainous areas) and carrying under twenty tonnes. why have a 630bhp unit with little extras if you could do work sufficiently with a 480bhp unit with all extras costing same?you don,t live in the engine, you live in the cab. i,ve driven 400bhp units that quite easily pulled 100tonnes up some of steepest inclines in uk. climbing and descending abilities of truck depend on driver, not bhp. go for comfort and not power my friend

I have a fondness for Macks. I took my road test on a Mack in 1978. It was a sweet ride.

No dealer in my area though. And I like to be able to yell at the parts guy when stuff goes wrong in person, not on the phone.

Here is a cross section of what we will be doing with the tractor.

Everything from teaching students their very first lesson on how to use a clutch properly to get going while bobtailing, all the way up to running over 16 mile 8% grades pulling 140,000 lb Super B's.

The corn binder is my first choice. But only because I have a very good working relationship with the dealer.

Then the FL, then the Stering, the WS.

Well it looks like Bush Bunny gets to rip Sanchez carrots out by the roots. Think I'll sell tickets to that event always can use some more money.

Rocky, as far as trucks and the choice you gave me in would be an International. I wouldn't even think about either one of the Shaker's and Sterling is part of that group as well.

But just for the heck of it walk across the street, test drive the KW and then tell him too high but thanks for the ride.

Rocky, we have had the opportunity to drive one of the International (9900ix) for exactly 3 short days, went out of our way to retrieve our KW for the rest of the time out. OMG what a wind tunnel, drove in a cross wind and the wind was whipping right through that tractor. Now that I have driven one of these god awful trucks I have new advice for ya Rocky.

I would like to take my vote back. Go across to the KW dealership and negotiate the dealer down to a better price and get yourself a "real" truck. Something along the lines of a real wind catcher W900 or a really long nose W900L. Yep, Bush Bunny is right we drive the best. 8)

if you,re gonna be loading 140,000lbs(or63.5tonnes) then you must be grossing about 100tonnes(in the uk this is classed as special types, its what i do) shit! you must have bucketloads of money if you can buy a heavy haul tractor and trailer and then let students loose with it  (no offence to american hgv students)

tumbo1 07-22-2006 03:49 AM

go with the freightshaker can find really good deals on used one and no trouble finding parts

Marmon man 07-28-2006 02:34 AM

Ummmmmmmm............how about a Marmon!

Born and RaiZed 07-28-2006 03:58 AM

Go with the truck you can PAY OFF the FASTEST!

If your doing Heavy haul, Its mostly in the rear gearing and and at least a 13 or even better a 18 speed!

If your letting students drive it, just put money in a jar EVERYDAY for a clutch job!
