RIP JoePa

You were Penn St

It is such a shame that he passed away under such circumstances. He has been in failing health for some time.

Mr. Ford95 01-22-2012 09:27 PM

The only good thing with the circumstances is that he was already no longer the coach when he passed, he didn't die in office. His football legacy is not tarnished IMO, as a person though it's tarnished a little bit.

I heard on a news segment earlier that some of the college administrators may be indicted.

ironeagle_2006 01-23-2012 12:17 PM

I will tell you what would be the Ultimate Irony he ends up Cleared after Death and the Admins that did NOT GO TO THE POLICE like they should have end up in Prison like they need to. JoePa was the one coach that deserved to go out on his terms not Fired over the Phone like he was.

Mr. Ford95 01-23-2012 08:12 PM

No matter what comes of it all, it still does not diminish what he accomplished ON THE FIELD. His character can be tarnished but what he did as a football coach for 46 years as the head man at PSU and 62 years overall at PSU as a coach, that shall never be tarnished. He not only helped build PSU but he kept them as a household name. He started as the head coach in 1966, it was 22 years before he had his first losing season after 2 national titles. It was another 22 years before he had another losing season where he proceeded to have 4 losing seasons over the next 5 years before getting the ship righted in 2005 and finishing 3rd that year. How many other coaches had a career even close to that long and were as successful at the D1 level? I can only name Bear Bryant and Eddie Robinson, both HOF's. Hell, Bear was the one who took his team into the Texas desert and nearly killed all those boys but that was considered a-ok even today by people, just don't be morally wrong like JoePa.

Great coach, but a weak man where it counted most.

Mackman 01-26-2012 08:27 PM

I think its a big joke that the Gov. Made the sate flag at half staff for him. That really pissed me off. Not like he was a war hero or a cop or firefighter that died tryin to save a life. He was a football coach who played a game.

Mr. Ford95 01-26-2012 09:08 PM

Uh Mack, he was a state official for his entire coaching career at Penn St. I think 62 years of service at least warrants some recognition by the state. If Frank Beamer were to up and croak at VT the flags here would be lowered for a day or 5 because he was a respected state official.

Mackman 01-27-2012 12:51 AM

I cant find nothing online saying he was a state official?? Maybe im not looking hard enough. I really dont know much about the guy. I just didnt think him diying was worth lowering all the states flags to have staff.
