Search for a running back continues

The Green Bay Packers might find their running back of the future in next month's NFL draft, but it doesn't appear the team has ruled out signing a veteran to help fill the void left by Ahman Green.


One option could be Kevan Barlow, who was cut by the New York Jets last month after one subpar season.


Barlow's agent, Doug Hendrickson, said Monday he had preliminary talks with the Packers on Friday at the University of Michigan's pro day workout. The odds are long Barlow will sign anywhere before the draft, instead waiting to see where the top rookies land.


"There are two good backs (Oklahoma's Adrian Peterson and California's Marshawn Lynch) in the draft," Hendrickson said. "There's more maybe later on Day 1 or Day 2. But really, there are two good backs, and the rest are marginal, at best."


After rushing for 1,024 yards in 2003, the 6-foot-1, 234-pound, sixth-year pro saw his production tail off his last two years with the San Francisco 49ers. The Jets acquired him with a fourth-round draft pick before last season, but Barlow ran for a career-low 370 yards, fell to third on the depth chart and was released.


It's unlikely any team will pay anything near the $3.25 million in 2007 or $4 million in 2008 he was due under his old contract.


Hend-rickson said Buffalo, Tennessee and Indian-apolis also have inquired about Barlow, 28.


Peterson and Lynch, both underclassmen, are considered first-round locks, but it's unclear whether either will be on the board when the Packers select at No. 16 overall. For instance, Buffalo, which picks 12th, needs a back after trading Willis McGahee to Baltimore.

Tony Fisher wants to come back but he says the Pack hasn't contacted him.

Thompson mum on Moss rumors


Green Bay Packers General Manager Ted Thompson steadfastly has declined to comment about trade rumors involving Oakland Raiders receiver Randy Moss.


Various sources have said the Packers are interested in Moss, but the tight-lipped Thompson never has said that publicly.


When asked if he has spoken to Raiders owner Al Davis during the offseason, Thompson laughed and replied: "I'm not going to discuss any of that stuff. I talk to a lot of people, but I don't ever tell who I talk to."


Thompson said he isn't swayed by public opinion when determining what players to add to the Packers' roster, even if fan sentiment is staunchly against him.


"Certainly, I don't disrespect or dishonor the passion of the Packer fans," Thompson said. "Often times, those people might not have all the information that we have.


"If I have to take a public relations shot because I think I'm doing something right for the Packers, I'm OK with that. I would rather it not be that way, but if I'm making the Packers better and I'm doing the right thing, even if everybody dislikes it, I would still do it."


Thompson said it's standard procedure for the Packers to conduct thorough background checks on players who might wind up on the roster. "You find out as much as you can," Thompson said.


"It doesn't necessarily mean the guy has to have been squeaky clean all his life," he added, "but (what's important) is what the character of the guy is at that particular moment in time."

Paving the way, it sounds like. I'm telling you, Moss ends up with the Packers when this is done. And if he stays healthy, from a purely athletic standpoint, he might be exactly what the Packers need in a #1 slot receiver. He would open up things for Favre more than anything. Favre can throw the ball to the moon. It'd be a nice change for him to do that and actually have a receiver down there to catch it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Moss fan. But like T.O. helped Romo, Moss can help Favre.

I agree with the part of opening things up but even if we got a Super Bowl with him(Stretching here) it would have an Asterisk in my, and others, mind with a big Stench.

Moss hated in Green Bay?

Might I remind you of T.O. dancing on the Cowboys star midfield, not once, but twice? The highlight of Cowboy fandom was watching Russel Maryland level him. It was the best 15 yard penalty ever. :)

That said, I still think T.O. is a baggage train, but I also can't deny that he opened things up for Romo last year. If his hand is healthy and he can hold on to the ball, it'll be more good things for Romo this year.

You're right-Guess we're in the same boat with Druggy Moss rubbing his butt on OUR goal post.

I remember when T.O took a knee to the Star on the 50 yard line. Oh I was hot! A year later, Mr Jonesy boy hires him. That's un-American. :P Like you said, Maryland waylaid him. Then after Emmitt scored a T.D, he went straight to the star. :P I was like, yeah, that's what I'm talkin about. :P
