You know, I saw the video on that the other day. What I want to know is what was the reason for it? I wasn't able to find anything to say why the ref did it and what penalties were being levied against him.

I dont know. I was talking to the night warehouse manager last night, and he mentioned it. That's how I heard about it, and I just happened to remember to search the video clip while ago. He asked me if I saw the game, and I was flipping back and forth, watching other games, but I must have missed it.

Was ref bracing for impact to protect himself in the collision? I dont know for sure. Maybe he had money on game or just plain flipped out and forgot where he was and what he was doing.

I have no idea. It's funny though. Maybe, he used to play football, and he misses it.

No, he wasn't bracing for impact. He actually lunged forward and took down the player with a shoulder hit. It was quite obviously, a tackle.

No it was not on purpose, he thought the QB was about to make a cutback and when he stepped forward to move out of the way, the QB decided to keep going the way he was going. He faked the cutback to juke the LB and it instead fooled the ref. He was bracing for the hit as soon as he realized he had gone the wrong way. Had he not braced for the hit, it wouldn't look so bad against him but he would have probably gotten injured had he not protected himself by covering his ribs.

No penalties, the SEC looked at it from several angle's. Lot of people are angry but it had zero impact on the game, Carolina scored a TD a few plays later to go up 17-7. People are claiming the ref was trying to throw the game.........better ways to do it instead of being obvious and tackling a guy on purpose. There is plenty of video out there that shows a bunch of different angle's and they show he was legitimately trying to get out of the way. If he was trying to tackle the QB on purpose, he would have kept both feet planted and really popped him(the ref in question is a former Kentucky LB) not hit him with 1 foot planted and falling backwards as they ran into one another.

Actually this happens a lot these days with WR's, TE's and RB's using the umpire's as moving picks against a defender. Sometimes a RB gets tangled up with them now and then on accident as he comes thru the line running a pass route. The ump will step forward and end up running smack into the RB.

I agree with this. I saw the game and it DID look intentional at first because he WAS stepping forward, and when he realized he was going to get hit, he instinctively kinda "leaned into it" with his arm covering his ribs. He would have been steamrolled had he not reacted.

But, the bigger problem is him even BEING there... like in the situation I highlighted. It happens with cross routes, too. I know they're all smarter than me about this, but I can't really see why they need an UMP there! What can he really see that someone else couldn't see from the side of the field? I mean.... right over the middle is just TOO much a target in the game. And the closer you get to the endzone, the more compressed that area gets. I've seen too many good plays ruined by contact with the Ump!

I really don't care what the reasons are for having him there. I think it is outweighed by the problems he causes.

Just my 2 cents.
