Quote:
State Police Public Information Officer Tom Pinkerton confirmed at 4:15 p.m. that there was a fatality involved when a van crashed with a tractor-trailer on Interstate 81 in Middlesex Township at 1:42 p.m. this afternoon.
Pinkerton said the Ford van was traveling on I-81 South, crossed over the median and struck the side of a tractor-trailer traveling on I-81 North near mile marker 53.
One of the drivers died, Pinkerton said, but added he was not releasing which driver died. The second driver was transported to Carlisle Regional Medical Center.
The Cumberland County coroner will release that information once the next of kin is notified, he said. Only two drivers were in the vehicles at the time of the crash.
Reports indicate, Pinkerton said, that the van was driving erratically before the crash.
The van hit the left side of the tractor-trailer’s cab. The impact caused the two rear axles of the tractor-trailer to come off. The tractor-trailer then jackknifed before coming to a rest in the median facing south, Pinkerton said.
No other vehicles were involved.
