I never went to school for truck driving. I got a real quick lesson on how to drive. I got thrown the keys in the military and told to drive the truck. I could do it just had a little problem when I got through the gears and was only doing like 15 and couldnt get going any faster. The cheif setting next to me reached down and flipped the lever and magically I got more gears. Never had seen one of those on a truck before.
I grandfathered my Military license into a CDL when I got out in 02 in IL. Just took the tests and passed never even a road test. I had an extremely hard time getting a job though. Most companies said I needed to go to their school to learn how to drive their trucks, I couldnt see doing that. I finally found a smaller company that hired me on and put me with a trainer for 2 weeks and then gave me a truck. The trainer though didnt sleep for the first couple of days when I was driving, beings I hadnt driven a truck with a sleeper or pulled a van. HE had asked me several times during my two weeks with him why I was being trained. I just told him cause I dont know crap about drivin. He taught me quite a bit. Especially about logs.
You could do it this way but, If I was to do it over again I would have probably went to a school to learn. I learned in winter but it never snowed when I was with the trainer. First run on my own it snowed and wasnt quite sure what to do but learned quick. Spent 6 years out and only 1 non preventable accident, my training couldnt have been that bad.
