I never really looked up at the stars until I started working nights for a year. Before that I had never seen a shooting star. It turned out to be one of my favorite things about working nights was watching the shooting ones. I ran primarily the back roads up in the mountains where theres no lights. I had some very memorable nights thats for sure.
I look to the skies almost every night, after watching the news, and seeing the latest gasoline prices.
Always enjoy watching the moon on certain nights though when there is this mystical ring around it. It happens once in a while, and it truly is a wonder. I remember one night watching the full moon with that ring around it, and it was a very quiet night. Suddenly, I heard the howls of coyotes not far off in the distance. To say the least it was a bit un-nerving...
Always enjoyed summer nights taking a blanket, and sleeping out under the stars, very relaxing, listening to the crickets, and just gazing at the stars... My Dad has a Telescope... I never even knew he was interested in the night sky until I was about 40. Funny the things you learn about your parents, over the years. Then again, he's always had a variety of hobbies, and interests.
I've always loved stargazing, but living near Atlanta the light pollution is so bad you can't see much, even during the nice meteor showers like the Perseids. I hope to get some runs out toward the Midwest away from the lights, trees, and mountains.
I am dismayed, but not suprised, by those who admit to never experiencing a fully lit starry sky, with no ambient light to interfere! This is INDEED one of the great advantages of OTR (night) driving!
But then, those "solar powered" SOLO drivers, who shut down in a truckstop with bright lights, may STILL never experience it! C'est domage! (What a pity! )
I LOVE the night sky! The moon (whatever phase it is in) and the stars (always there) are a comfort to me! It brings me closer to my maker, and washes away the worries of the day! And you can stop and PEE just about wherever you please!
I'd HATE to even suggest it, as I DON'T want to ruin it, but if EVERY solo driver drove at night, there'd be more parking availablle, LESS traffic to deal with, and less accidents due to 4wheelers! Not to mention more peace of mind!
But, THAT would be asking TOO MUCH!
So, STAY in your little cubbyhole for the night, and DO what you do while you're there. I will continue to pass you by, and enjoy the wonders of the night sky!
I no longer KNOW, nor CARE, who put them there..... I just know he was a POET! And a BETTER one than ME! The "written word" is overrated! Nature is the REAL THING! There IS no "substitute!"
I remember watching the first "Sputnick" go over years ago. My dad had a small telescope. Wonderful and thoughtful entertainment on a warm summer night.
