TWIC

Starting in September if you want or need to pick up in a Port you will need to be TWIC qualified and have the card. How many people here know of this and have you done it yet? I talk to quite a few drivers that have not heard of it and were quite surprised.

You only are required to have a TWIC card if you will be in a secure area of a port without an escort. That is my understanding of it. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I was told at the TWIC center that you will need a TWIC card to access the port. Anyone going into the port either for fuel, lumber or containers will have to have one or they will be denied entry. The TWIC site says that it is for unescorted access but i had both the twic center and the head of security for New London, CT port tell me that without one I wouldnt be allowed into the gate.

# What is TWIC?

* TWIC is a common identification credential for all personnel requiring unescorted access to secure areas of MTSA-regulated facilities and vessels, and all mariners holding Coast Guard-issued credentials. Individuals who meet TWIC eligibility requirements will be issued a tamper-resistant credential containing the worker's biometric (fingerprint template) to allow for a positive link between the card and the individual.

If the government keep this up we will need to have a tamper proof card to go to the toilet.

Well, I applied for my TWIC and was told that it would be 6-8 weeks for it to come in. The next week I got an email from the gov telling me to come and pick it up! What? The government being efficient about something? I need a drink

This is just another in a long line of Gov't. money grabs.Even when you have one of these cards you will still need the Sea Link card if you go to the Port of NY and I'm sure other ports around the country are the same. After you pay over a hundred bucks for the local card you can pay over a hundred more to the feds so you can haul what is more often then not the cheapest freight to haul.
When will it be enough??? you pay for finger printing and a probing for this TWIC b.s. and then if you want to cross into Canada you pay the same people the same money for the same thing to get another card (Fast Card) and if you want a haz-mat endorsement you once again have to pay the same people the same money for the same thing and what makes this one even better when you renew your CDL not only do you retest for the haz-mat for another fee toy also have to pay to re-fingerprinted for another hundred bucks.I asked the over paid gov't. employee what the chances where of me being able to change my finger prints to which he said that was the policy set by the gov't.
When will it be enough because I just can't imagen what kind of a card we will have to pay for next, maybe one for putting bungee cords on tarps or how about for lifting toilet seats,or maybe having one for crossing every state line and they put troops in Jack Boots with high powered rifles to check zee paperz are in order.
