Is it 3 years or 10 years employment reference check
I've recently applied for a few different companies and have seen some differences in how far they check back.
One company I applied for said they only check back 3 years and are not required to check back any further, and also say that many companies are difficult about giving employment info past 3 years old. However, a different company I applied for insisted that I provide them with a w-2 from a job I worked at 8 years ago because they say when they call to verify the employment the company says that I worked there for a shorter period of time than I actually did. So.....what exactly is the "Law" when it comes to this. Anyone know or have similar experiences?? DDT |

Of course just because a company has to verify employment for a specific amount of time does not mean that they can't do it for longer.
Beyond that Fredog is right on the money. |
Yes,
Good Replies, I think it does vary by company. I think 10 year background is kinda silly, a couple companies I worked for in the last ten years are no longer in business. Luckily it seems as though most only check back 3 years. I know some regs say 10 years but It seems they get away with only going back 3, which is way more reasonable than 10. DDT |
Companies are required to send letters to your employers during the last three years. DAC keeps full records for seven years and then only employment info from 7 to 10. Drug history is 3 years.

I think it may be something like that. They don't have to send a letter (we all sign the release letters when we apply for a new job) past three years, but some will want to anyway, and most others just wanna do the bare minimum requirement. Which is better for me anyway, one or two past employers have been difficult in giving employment references, apparently they are not required to respond. DDT |
Each company is different as far as how far they go back on reference checks.
DOT requires you to verify 3 years, with Drug and Alcohol history provided. You must list 10 years of work history on your application. Every company has their own policy as far as how much past that 3 year mark they go. Our company verifies 5 years. |

Strange that the driver is required to list ten years but companies are only required to do three. I'm sure I'm not the only one here who has a couple past employers that are no longer in business so I think it's silly to go back ten years. |
