Penske and Scale House
I have a stupid question. But me and my family will be moving in 3 weeks to Las Vegas. We will be getting a 26 foot truck. My question is will we have to stop at every scale house on I-40 or can I by-pass them. I have a class a with hazmat but I don't know if I will drive or not. We live in Arkansas and am moving to Las Vegas Nevada. Thanks for your help.

If you're moving your own household goods in a rental truck, I would say "no - you don't have to stop". You can always call your local DOT and ask them to be 100% sure.

commercial moving=yes
personal moving=no,unless its an agriculture check |
Unless the sign says all trucks over X amount of weight, and you fall within that category, then you can just keep on trucking.
|
FWIW, many truck rental companies now have signs posted in their offices advising all rental trucks/customers to stop at weigh stations.

I've noticed that when U-Hauls (or Penske/Ryder/etc.) do pull into the coops, they frequently get pulled around back. |
In your situation I'd blow right on past. :D

Penske and Scale House
I recently did a personal relocation using a Budget straight truck and car carrier from Cali to Florida. Budget's instructions were explicit that I had to pull into ALL scalehouses or POEs. Reason - Homeland Security direction. In Arizona and NM I was waved thru. In Arizona, NM, and Texas Border Patrol may also want to take a peek. The only state I was told to "pull around back" was Florida for an ag inspection. After the inspector had me open the rollup and saw how fully I was loaded, he decided he had better things to do.
BTW, you'll have to cross the Colorado at Laughlin, you won't be able to go over Boulder Dam with the truck. BOL |
Heres what I did back in 2000. I rented a Uhaul. Drove from Albany N.Y. to Raleigh N.C. Weigh station in VA on I-95 and Weigh station on I-95 in NC. Blew past both of them.
No one came chasing after me, so I am gonna say don't waste your time stopping. Back then I didnt even know what a weigh station was, so it obviously doesnt apply. |
Penske and Scale House
"Here's what I did back in 2000." Irrelevant, pre-9/11. BOL

This is obviously a little late to the original poster, but when I moved from Las Vegas, NV to Austin, TX in May 2006, I drove a 26 foot Penske and never stopped at weight stations. Went I-40 to 287 to I-35 with no issues.
