Cross border freight question

Working for a US carrier I know I can haul freight into Canada.I'm going to assume I can't run loads within Canada (say Montreal to Winnipeg) but can I haul loads back out to the US or do I have to come back empty ?

You are correct, you cannot touch our domestic freight. We cannot touch your domestic freight either. Makes for some interesting deadheading sometimes!

You can pick up a load anywhere in Canada as long as it is going back to the US

Correct. I may be wrong across the board, but in the United Van Lines system, its a $20,000 fine per shipment if caught hauling from canada-Canada. You can deliver in Canada, but you must haul a load back across the border or deadhead out.

I agree with Bandit and Shawnee. You can bring goods into Canada and return to the States with goods, but once you are empty in Canada you can't pick up a load and deliver it within Canada. Same thing goes for any Canadian drivers delivering goods into the States. Seems only fair I'd say. You aren't taking any runs away from the Canadian or American drivers that don't crossborder. Drive safe everyone. :)

It's not leagall but,I see Canadian trucks hualing freight down here all the time, and nothing is ever done about it.
I see companies like Mercer and Landstar and I'm sure many others that have Canadian trucks in thier fleet with Ill. tags now, somethings just not right with that IMO.
