ticketed in GA
Yeah okay, I took a chance and I got caught.
Driving through Atlanta, rather then taking the 285 around. Anyways, anyone got any idea as to the range in price this ticket could cost? Also, why is a court appearance mandatory, when I'm admitting guilt and plan on paying the fine? Thanks for any help/suggestions/answers in advance. orama43 |
Every ticket I have ever received has either had the fine schedule printed on the rear or I was supplied with a fine chart with the ticket. When in doubt, call the courthouse that you are required to report to.

Fight it! Claim ignorance that you couldn't get over to the 285 bypass because of traffic and felt it would be safety hazard to attempt a turn-a-round
Get the supervision. BTW- what was the ticket for? Failure to obey a traffic sign or something? |

The only thing you could do, and you didn't hear this from me, is the only way you're allowed to run into Atlanta and not taking the bypass is for Pickups or Deliveries. Use your imagination on what you can do because I'll be damned if I'm gonna put it down in black and White :P |
Gotcha
|
I actually got away with it ONCE and I know a couple of others on here have done it but do it more than once you're pushing the odds :P
|
I have driven through Atlanta a bunch of times and didn't get caught.I think the cop just saw you do somewthing you were not supposed to be doing.
|
I have too- but I was legitamitely going to a United agent in the circle.
Me thinks someone brought attention to themselves. |
You could always mention that you were making a pick up at the airport and pickup location was actually inside 285. North Cargo should work, Hapeville Ga. Luftansia, Fedex, DHL, several other companies. Awful busy place and lots going in and out.

If you are making a pick up, you wouldn't have that paperwork. I usually only have a confirmation and that sometimes is signed by the wife and not with me.

Ticket for Driving through and not around use to be just 100.00, but that been some years ago. more than likely gone up. I've had to go inside Atlanta many mnay times no problems, but with my luck, if I tried to sneak through, I'll see the Blue Light Special.

Doesn't work like that in GA. Court fines aren't quoted because the law enforcement agency isn't the one that sets the fine. The court covering whatever jurisdiction the violation occured in are the ones that do that. Usually, it's a State court for that county. Quoting fines for the tickets can be somewhat of a conflict of interest. If I were to tell someone it's 'x' dollars but it's really 'y' dollars then bad things can happen to me; not to mention the fact that the accused can bring up the 'speed trap' type defense. Wait a couple of days for the citation to be filled, call the county court that's listed on the citation and ask them what their normal fine cost for that violation is. There are litterally many ways to get a lower than advised fine, as long as 'you' are cooperative. Best advice is obey the law next time, no matter how retarded it is. Also, count your lucky stars your CDL is from a compact state, if it wasn't you'd be going to the judge the minute he wrote you the ticket. |

I've heard rumors about GA taking you straight to the jailhouse to pay the ticket on the spot, but I never had to put it to the test. I did get an OOS ticket in the Tarheel where I had to produce a couple hundred in cashola before the DMV cop would let me get my truck fixed. |
I have driven right through Atlanta many-many times and for 4 yrs 30 weeks a year to Florida I have never been bothered going through. I have had cops see me and everything. I have always and I mean always gone 55mph and had my ass in the right lane  8)

Georgia is a member of the Non-Resident Violator Compact. It basically states that drivers who have licenses issued from other member states can post bond (in ga, displaying your ID and signing the ticket means you're promising to show up in court aka bond). Driver's whose license is from Michigan, Wisconsin, California, Montana, and Alaska are supposed to be taken before the court to post their bond aka pay the fine as issued by the court. Now I've seen plenty of cops not take those people to court so it's still a descretionary thing to most ga cops. I mean who really wants to waste their time in court on a $20 dollar ticket. That reminds me of that one Chevy Chase movie in that old time court in Lousiana or something.
FWIW, many traffic offenses committed in the state of GA are arrestable. They are considered crimes and you have to post bond to continue on (via self recognizance / signing the ticket, or actually going to court and paying it outright.) When you can not show your ID (or refuse to sign the ticket) you will be arrested and taken before the judge to deal with him. |
