Default Tail light regs

I'm fixing up a 1978 lowboy trailer and part of what it needs is all new lights. It originally had a 6 x 8" rectangular single lens light with two bulbs.

Most all the trailers I see on the road have two round lights on each side separating the brake and turn lights. Since my new LED lights combine all three stop-turn-tail functions into one, can I use just one single round light on each side? Can't find anything online that spells it out.

I have seen a couple of late model straight trucks with just one light on each side but are trailer rules different?
Do I have to bring it up to current rules or just to what would have been required when it was built? (I know the reflective tape has to be brought up to date)

I don't remember reading anything about having more than two lights on a trailer. I see no reason why the equipment cannot use a single light for brakes and turn signals if it came from the factory with that set up. If you cannot find anything in the regulations, you might check with a scale, if you have one near you.
