What a crazy business this is

3 weeks ago was my best week since I started doing this. This week blew chunks. Today is Friday and I'm "up" $390 (oops $340, I just paid for a night at a motel) for the week. I'm in north GA and I'm sorely tempted to drive back to Michigan tomorrow so I can be positioned in a good location to hit the ground running on Monday. But deadheading over 700 miles would cost over $400 even in my little straight truck bringing my week's earnings down to -$80 or so after expenses. But if I spend the weekend here, I'll pay $100 for a room for Sat and Sun night and be faced with another miserable day hoping a load falls out of the sky for me on Monday.

So I deadhead home with -$80 in earnings and have a 1 day weekend on Sunday to lick my wounds or I spend the weekend here bored senseless (and bugging you guys with senseless posts lol) and end the week at +$240 but with butt-ugly prospects for Monday.

Wouldn't I be making like $400-$450 with that gig? That would be awesome! :D

Are you on sylectus? Lots of expedited loads for straight trucks.

I had a few months experience with Sylectus dispatching for someone else before I bought a truck and got started. So I called them expecting that I'd just have to pay them the hefty monthly fee and I'd be good. They told me I had to be in business for 6 months and have 4 trucks on the road to use their service. So after 6 months in business I called them again to see if either they lowered their requirements or maybe I could talk them into signing me up anyway. Now it's 10 trucks! Thanks for the tip though.

Btw, I'm worried about what the winter will be like but I have to say I'm not really hurting, not bad anyway. This week was terrible but I've had some really good weeks too.

If you had your haz-mat permits (for your DOT #) there is a place I could recommend for you to call Monday morning. I know they ship "Elephant snot" in totes.....but I think they still require you have the haz-mat to haul for them.....even non-haz like snot is.

One week means nothing! What you are averaging since the start?

i'd find a way to put a sleeper on the truck. that'd save you a bunch.
