who hauls their 5th wheel camper with their truck?
 

Basically what I want to know is is the king pin the same or will I need to change it to a bigger one some how?

Not sure about the size thing, but I've seen quite a few tractors hooked to 5th wheel campers. Saw one that the guy modified a freightliner classic:

1 axle was removed (forward drive), 5th wheel was moved to the very rear of the frame. The topper to it all was that he had a Smart car (those tiny little cars) on a set of ramps between the sleeper and the camper. The car was sitting cross-ways on the truck (load from the side). Coolest setup I've ever seen.

Yeah, I saw one like that in northern New York a couple years back with an aluminum deck for the smart car, except I think the truck was a tandem.

The king pin is the same size but you will need to have a sliding fifth wheel with a long slider to get it far enough back.
You will also need to install an electric trailer brake in your truck.

thanks for the info on the sliding wheel, didn't think of that but I'm not worried about the electric brakes for a 300 mile trip.

I have a friend down in Toronto who hauls a wood chipper behind his truck which probably weighs close to 10K and hasn't had working electric brakes since it was new. The MTO pulls him over occasionally but never bothers him because the truck weighs so much, I'm not worried about a camper that weighs in around 3K.

I've never heard of a fifth wheel rv that weighed 3000 lbs.
My last one was a 34' Sierra with 1 slideout and it weighed around 12000 lbs.

Ok you're right, I double checked the specs and it weighs 4850 lbs. It's only 24' and there's not much fancy about it but its insulated pretty well for the winter. It's gonna be my home during the week while I'm working 6 hours away from home. Something like yours would be really nice, but then I might not want to come home on the weekend:roll3:

The reason I'm asking is because the pickup that I was going to haul it with isn't going to be available, but I was offered a company highway tractor if its ok with the boss.

I'm sure that you could get by without trailer brakes for the short haul that you will be pulling it but I hope they don't decide to inspect you as you go through any scales because I don't believe that every inspector would give you a break like your friend got in the past.
Not having working trailer brakes is one thing but not even having a brake controller installed in the truck is another.
