mobile internet
i am currently using a sprint USB stick for my internet. I really hate how there is almost never a signal. Is there a more dedicated internet source for a truck thats always moving?
something similar to the in motion satellite systems like the vuqube? |

i am curious if the technology exists to receive an internet signal via an in motion satellite. I am going to take a look into RV dealers. i basically want the same quality internet i have at home, but on the road and while i am in motion. i figure if the likes of Directv or dish are able to send a signal down to a vuqube (or other similar device) for TV, they should be able to do the same for internet |

If you think Sprint is expensive, wait until you try the Hughes satelite internet thing. It has something like a 1meg per day limit and is far from cheap.

I have the Verizon Droid X phone which is old tech now, costs an extra $20 a month to use it as Wifi, and have internet almost everywhere. It's a bit slow in 1X areas, but most populated areas have 3G service. Beats only having service when you're parked at a truck stop with free Wifi, or extremely slow service if you subscribe to a chain truck stop service. Verizon has service almost everywhere.

I switched to Verizon not long ago from Sprint. I bought one of the jetpack mobile internet. I'm not too happy with that thing at all. My phone (Droid RAZR) will have a perfect 4G connection and the hotspot will show 1 or 2 bars on a 2G. It drops signal all the time, too - a *LOT* more than the phone.

If you have a Sprint air card, you may want to do an update when you change locations. I was told by Sprint that it might solve a problem that I was having with my air card not long ago. A couple of days ago I could not get online and I tried the update of profile. It worked.

thank you all for the replioes. i guess the tech DOES indeed exist for wanting to have connection speeds similar to my home internet, but now comes the pricing:(

Have you contacted Sprint to see if their technical people can help? It has been a few months since I have been on I-80 in Pennsylvania, but the last time that I went up there I didn't have much of a problem getting online, although the connection was a little slow, as I recall.

right now i'm in queens ny at the con ed plant. this is the only time i've not had full service. however, the stick drive i had before as a modem worked a lot better, and faster. i like the mifi for being wireless though.

Now that Sprint is threatening to "drop me" for excessive roaming I think I'm going to try these guys.
I've spoke to numerous other drivers who are either being threatened the same way or have already had their accounts closed by Sprint. Not a "driver friendly" company and poor coverage on "their" network if you run out west. Millenicom | Wireless Broadband Plans |
Verizon has the best coverage but there are several ways to boost your signal. Have a look here...

I too was dropped from sprint for roaming. Then they had the balls to charge me an extra month after I was cancelled. They sent a $121 bill to collections.. I keep telling collections i'll settle for $25.00 but they guffed at that... after 2 years i've got them down to $45.00. I told them i'm stubborn... lol.
Im a beatnik myself... I have an iphone, a jailbreak app, and a program from cydia (installed during the jailbreak) and on my computer... perfect connection under 3g conditions.. 1x is dependant on the area. Hasn't failed me yet. |
Sprint dropped me as well. I guess they don't like a customer that's been with them for 6+ years that pays a $200+ per month bill well before it was actually due. I was talking with a driver one day and he said Sprint dropped him because he had too many text messages on his unlimited texting plan.

I love free wifi! Free WiFi hotspots are everywhere, and there are increasingly more of them each day. It is tempting to use them when out and about with your laptop or hand held gadget. But there are good risks associated with the unsecured links, and you have to be cautious. :(
