cb's and navigation units.
whats a decent cb? i found this Cobra 29 LX - CB Radios Plus . found one "peaked and tuned" for $10 more. no clue what it means, i cant stand using a cb but i do need one.
as far as navigation.. what unit is good? my friend has a garmin 465t and he said its not that great. i have it narrowed down to the cobra and rand mcnally i watched tracer's review on the rand mcnally and it seems like a good unit. |
What are you planning on using the cb for? Just communicating with customers? If so the cobra 29 lx will do you just fine I would spend the $10 for the peak and tune. I run a general lee. If you plan on using the radio regularly I would spend some additional dough and buy something more powerful.
I have the pc miler 450 unit I believe and its great! We hated the garmin 465t it was horrible! |
I'm the worst person to ask about cb's - had nothing but crap luck with them since I started driving.
For navigation, I use CoPilot v8 Truck Laptop - it's treated me very good so far. |
i wont be using the cb regularly. just road conditions and waiting at some shippers. i dont want to spend a bunch of money when a $50 cb would do the same thing. i'll have the regular whip antenna's.
i was thinking about the laptop gps but my luck it'll be stolen or it'll crash. |
I have the same cb cobra 29x. I have no antenna, i rarely turn the thing on. If i do turn it on, its always someone talking about mexicans, blacks, and obama! Far, as the gps goes i have the pc miler 540. Its nice to have, I still call for directions.

Just like what a lot of the others said, the Cobra will be a good one for ya. Just to talk to the guard shacks etc, and smokey reports and what not. Can't beat it.
|
Cobra (25 or 29) would be good, as would a Uniden (PC-68 or PC-78). Personally, I like my Galaxy's, but for something $50-100, the Uniden's and Cobra's are decent.

I've never had any luck with a used CB, always ended up with junk. If you're buying used, ask why its being sold! Bought a brand new Cobra 29, works great, has for over 3 years now.

I use Microsoft Streets and Trips 2007 on a net book because I prefer a bigger screen than a "GPS" can offer and S&T lets me customize my route unlike any other that I have tried. And it only costs $100 for the software and antenna.
|
ha.. just my luck.. on streets and trips you can run a mac (which i do). if the rand mcnally dont work out i'll return it and get the program for the mac.

I have a BIG radio for sale if your interested.... Cobra 200GTL for $150 NEW
As for a GPS, I have a 4yr old Garmin C580 and it works great. I spent the $100 at Garmins site and got the lifetime map updates too. If I was going to buy a new GPS tho, it would be the Mcnally TND-510 or 710. Saw it at MATS and it has a ton of cool features including routing points, trip info and bluetooth |
i just saw the radio for sale. great timing as the one i posted i bought and will be here tomorrow. lol
for the gps i got the 510. i watched tracer's review on the 710 and it sold me on it. got a ok deal on it too. amaizon.com $349 shipped. |

That's the one part of trucking that I do not miss at all. All those "BIG RADIOS" that come across like a bunch of garbage.

And there is a really cool user group forum for S&T help. Did you just download an update windwalker.....you didn't have to buy a new version? |
i bought the peaked and tuned one because it was $10 more. who knows what the future brings too. i might get back in to hauling mail. at times you need a radio to keep in contact with others you are running with.
the gps can be updated, that was the selling point on it for me. |
I like CoPilot v8 because it's VERY touch-screen friendly and looks perfect on my 7" touchscreen. ALK has monthly updates as well as quarterly map updates. I've had 2, maybe 3, times that I had to go to an address that wasn't in it, but I verify directions anyway and follow those. But, there have also been times when the directions the customer has given me that were so far off you'd be scratching your head wondering how they got to work, but CoPilot took me right in. It also has the truck settings (length, width, weight, hazmat, etc). The built-in truckstop poi's are pretty extensive, even though some of the mom & pop one's may show in the center of the closest town, or in the center of the interchange. You can also import your own poi's, as well. I have 3 custom datasets I use: company terminals, customers & Pilot/Flying J (downloaded those from their site).

Before I bot S&T, I tested a few stand alone units...Tom Tom, Nuvi and Garmin. I dropped on of one of them getting out of my truck and it wouldn't power up after that. I thought, "what would happen if I had years of way points in there? They are gone forever."
I suppose they must have a way to back that stuff up now? |
