How much coffee do you drink?

It is said that 300 mg of caffeine a day is okay. Anything over that can be bad for your health. 1 oz of regular drip coffee has 20 mg of caffeine, so a 'small' cup of coffee (16 oz) will put .. 320 mg of caffeine in your system, which is already more than the recommended daily allowance.

One solution is to drink espresso-based coffee with added hot water ("Americano'). 1 shot of espresso only has 70 mg of caffeine. So, if you're ordering a 'tall' (small) cup of Americano at Starbucks (it has 2 shots), then you only getting 140 ml of caffeine. A 'grande' cup (3 shots) will have 210 mg of caffeine. In my experience, espresso-based coffee tastes much better than regular drip coffee.

Another solution is to drink green tea. I buy jasmine green tea for 3 bucks at the local pharmacy (24 packets inside) and most truck stops do not charge for cups and hot water. (The bankrupt Flying J in McCammon Idaho where I spent a few days recently did ask for 50 cents for each cup.) I prefer getting paper one-time cups because 'travel mugs' after a while tend to distort the taste, no matter what material they are made of and how thoroughly you clean up.

I found that when the first drink of the day is tea, I drink less coffee afterwards. But if I start the morning with coffee, than I'll be drinking coffee all day and will eventually get much much more than the recommended 300 mg of caffeine! I once quit coffee cold turkey for 2 weeks and noticed right away I started sleeping better and felt less tired at the end of each day.

How 'bout you guys? Anyone willing to switch to green tea for a couple of weeks and see what changes in your body?

Gatorade isn't exactly healthy either. Just look at the carb content on the sticker ....

Well, tell it to the military.... i drink about 2 qts a day. I heard that its no difference than drinking water. It has electrolyte's in it.

But in the military you are burning more than your intake, driving a truck and sitting on your ass you do the total opposite. I know of several guys that had to stop drinking gatorade because the electrolyte intake was too much and caused them to have gastro-intestinal problems

I wash my coffee mug EVERY morning before I fill it up with coffee, and I only fill it in the morning since I don't stop driving once I start till my hours run out (Yes, I will drive 11hrs NON-STOP)

How much sodium is in that crap? That ain't for truck drivers.

I drink too much coffee, both me and my wife will admit to that. 24oz. in the morning, and most days another 24oz, midmorning. Another small cup in the afternoon.

Malaki86 12-12-2010 10:34 PM

My wife and I drink 1 thermos-full per day, which is exactly 1 regular pot full, 1/2 gallon. So, 1/4 gallon is what I drink.

When people asked me, "$%!~ man...how much coffee do you drink in a day?"
I use to minimize how much I was actually drinking. (everybody does)
Then I reached a point, I couldn't remember if that's the first pot I'm on.

Anyway... I gotta go... I gottanother 500 miles to go today. :block:

that's 480 mg of caffeine in the morning, 480 in the afternoon, and assuming the small cup is 16 oz, that'd add another 320 mg. Or 1,280 mg of caffeine a day per person - over 4 times the recommended amount.

I know............ that's pretty bad isn't it.
I was too afraid to do the math.
I'll seek help.

I usually drink coffee in the morning and that is it. I will normally have 2 or 3 cups. I think most things we do or eat is all right, if done in moderation. I don't drink much coffee in the summer. I wonder if hot tea has the same amount of caffeine as coffee? I used to be a big tea drinker.

Tea is much better in this regard. Black tea has 50 mg of caffeine per cup; while green tea has only 30 mg of caffeine per cup. Green tea with jasmine is my personal favorite.

But to be a BBR you have to drink Coffee. It has to be black and 2 days old.

I put soooo much sugar in my coffee you'd think it was hot chocolate. I even refuse to order coffee at places with the packets and not the pourer cuz I use so much....... I did however STOP drinking soda about 10yrs ago and that has made a HUGE difference (tho now I just make up for it in beer when I'm home LOL)

I have decided to make a new years resolution, which I think I will stick too cuz i'm on a health kick and trying to get back into shape since this last year or OTR has taken it's toll and added about 40lbs..... so no more beer and coffee, just iced tea and water. We will see how it goes.

repete 12-16-2010 06:23 AM

I guess I'm not a BBR , no coffee for me and I shower regularly! I used to drink A LOT of MT Dew (6 pack) a day but have switched to diet Dew and limit that. I love sweet tea but have cut that out too, being good is no fun at all

I quit soda cold-turkey and only drank tea (had to have some caffiene cuz the headaches were terrible) but I dropped 30lbs in a month. Try it and you will be amazed too!!

geeshock 12-17-2010 10:28 AM

1 thermos per day is my limit, thats like to large pilot cups.

Copperhead 12-19-2010 12:51 AM

Well I am one of the most politically incorrect individuals regarding coffee. I have two and sometime three thermos' of coffee a day, year round. Been that way for over 30 years and see no reason to stop now. If I worried about all the things some interest group said was going to harm me, the worry would shorten my life more than the things they say I should worry about.

Aufgeblassen 12-19-2010 01:19 AM

I drink *NONE*

Really?? I can drink a 16oz cup and drive for 500 miles w/o stopping. I'm glad I'm still young tho LOL

Now those Monster Java drinks are a different story.... when I was running local I was downing 4 a day and peeing every 30min.... it was BAD, and turns your pee GREEN!!!!

Graintrain 12-22-2010 02:10 PM

Some days I drink a stanley thermos full and some days just a cup before I leave out in the morning. If I have water in the truck with me, I drink less coffee. If I don't have coffee or water I grab an Emergency Red Bull from the cooler:block:, then I hafta go every little bit the rest of the day. Drink nothing but water after 5 pm whether I'm driving or home.

Cluggy619 08-30-2019 12:20 AM

Studies on everything

I wouldn't put so much on a study of coffee. Some will say it bad for you, other will say you will longer. A study can mean anything the researcher wants it to.

For example: For men, masturbating can lead to a lower chance of prostate cancer. Some studies will say that masturbating over 21 times per month can lead to a 33% less chance of getting prostate cancer. I know, you can look it up on google.

So don't put much stock in studies. Live a good life. Die happy.
