Solo, I haven't heard of it being law that you carry the actual lease contract in the truck, but I do know you need a single sheet lease agreement. I keep that with my permits and all that stuff. I do keep a contract with me though... that badboy is like 56 pages long. No joke!

RostyC 08-15-2010 03:14 AM

that badboy is like 56 pages long
That's because you have it wrapped around that old Hustler magazine. :lol:

RostyC 08-15-2010 03:16 AM

I never read the blog but if you were posting your numbers and the places you were hauling out of, I can see where your company would have problem with that.

Just a little extra math and some one could come in and beat the rate just enough to get some work.

bulldozerbert 08-20-2010 01:25 PM

well, I can no longer read your blog Tracer, so just wondering if you dropped off the planet?

Did you find some work till you get on with a carrier?

I had to delete the blog ... didn't want to ***s off my former employer too much because I needed their references to apply to ...Landstar! Did the application a couple of weeks ago, and now Landstar got all the paperwork out of the way (and the MacKinnon did their part after I sent them an email saying the blog had been erased). You gotta do what you gotta do. Might start a new blog later on if Landstar has nothing against it. Going to do a medical and drug-test this coming Monday. If everything's okay, they say they'll send me to have the truck inspected, and after that it's a 2-day orientation in Hamilton, ON (30 min from where I live). I'll be joining with my own stepdeck trailer, still with a Conestoga on it. Hopefully the rolling tarp won't be in the way of making money. Also found another small family company in Ontario, Canada that hires o/o with own equipment, but they said they had just hired 2 or 3 new guys a couple of months ago, but if things should pick up in the fall they would act on my resume. They specialize in machinery transportation and if Landstar option doesn't work, I'd go with these Canadian guys. I was ready to start a temp driving job, but then Landstar finally called me saying they got all the required references, so I decided not to bother. I've sold half of the stuff in my apartment that I can live for a couple of months without :) and I'm all ready to put a blue star on my truck and trailer!

Why wouldn't you get your own numbers? Or that's not an option in socialistic Canada?

if by "numbers" you meant "cvor" or "authority", then i didn't get 'em because insurance here is too expensive. don't snub canada, we provide 90% of your imports :)

Well, Canada is #1 in terms of exports from US. But in terms of imports, China - you're right - is Numero 1; and Canada is #2.

"Main export partners

Canada, 13.2%;
Mexico, 8.3%;
China, 4.3%;
Japan, 3.3%.

Main import partners
China, 15.4%;
Canada, 11.6%;
Mexico, 9.1%;
Japan, 4.9%;
Germany, 3.7%."

I'm pretty sure LS will also have a problem with you posting rates and customers are etc. That's what PM's are for. :)

I think I already know the answer to this question, but I'll ask it anyway just in case we get busy and I need a truck every now and again.........will LS allow you to find your own loads?

That's why I got rid of the blog :( As for the question, I'm interested in that too. I'll start a new thread in case someone with Landstar experience can help.

Fratsit 08-25-2010 01:06 PM

Man, what a bummer. I just sent you a PM asking about your Blog and then I saw this. I wish you the best of luck. I look forward to any future updates.

Well, the paperwork part of the 3 week hiring process is almost over :) It's just been confirmed that I'm attending the 2-day orientation for Landstar in Hamilton, ON this coming Monday, Aug-30! I intend to be paying close attention in the classroom and I need to make this work. Okay, agents, agents, agents ... how do I find good ones and get into their "white books". That's the main thing. Hopefully, I"ll learn all this from 8 am till 3 pm on Monday. You'll never guess how many people are attending :)

I'm guessing 2 people. You and the dispatcher from your previous company. :)

Two including me :)

tracer 08-28-2010 04:45 AM

I actually did the export of the blog to my computer before deleting it, but then I was switching computers and the file got lost in the process. The more I think about my departure from MacKinnon, the more I think they just used blogging as an excuse. I was reading the terms of pay and noticed that after three years of service with the company, they pay:

-100% of Heavy User tax ($550)
- Canada Border transponder (some $200 a year)
and some other stuff

Until 3 years, it's split between the owner/operator and the company, and if you have less than 1 year, you pay it yourself 100%. I joined them in April 2007, and I was "no longer with this company" as of August 5th, 2010. You do the math.

Maybe I do tend to get into too many details online about the trucking business that some people find are 'too much'. Unfortunately, one of the chief honchos at my previous employer was one of them :) But one of the reasons I do that, is that I can't stand b/s. And that was the mode operando at the company I should have left years ago.

tracer 08-28-2010 04:46 AM

You're right, Bigmon! It's 2 but I don't know yet who's the other guy is :)

b00m 09-01-2010 01:51 PM

How about when you post stuff online dont post it with your real info in there.That way,if they check out the stuff cant really tell anything at all.Is that simple!!!

I was younger and stupider back then, but I did get away with it.

When I first bought my truck, I ran from Buffalo, NY to Green Bay, WI with no plates, no markings on the door, nothing. Went through several scales too. They didn't care.

That was my thinking when I decided to try getting away with it. I think a lot of times they really don't pay much attention to a bobtail when one comes through the scale... you obviously aren’t overweight. I DID tape a piece of paper in my windshield (like you would if you had a temporary registration) and perhaps that also helped.

I put a temp tag up in the windshield, the truck still had the previous owners numbers on it. Maryland scale on 83 south didn't bat an eye.

tracer 09-05-2010 03:59 PM

I'm doing the same thing now :) I have no real plates, just a paper permit, so I printed out an official looking piece of paper and stuck it to the right lower bottom of the windshield. So far I did 1,000 miles and no one said anything. Landstar says I should get my real IL plates in 2 to 3 weeks. But I did keep my $20 Ontario truck plates (with a "T" for "temporary" on them). If I ever have to switch companies again, this plate might come in useful, you never know.

mike3fan 09-07-2010 06:29 PM

Ah yes, overpriced Landstar plates. Remember those well.

GMAN 09-08-2010 01:55 AM

As I recall Landstar does add a little to the base plate when they get them for you. You are much better off getting your own plates if you have the money to do it. Illinois is one of the most expensive states in which to buy base plates.

I don't know how it works in US, but if I want to get genuine commercial plates for a 80,000 lb GVW truck in Canada, I have to get insurance first. So, it's not just plates. It's a complicated matter, one that I'm not ready to tackle at the moment. I"m happy with IL plates for now.

LBF 09-10-2010 02:38 PM

Call Dalton Timmis Insurance down in Ancaster as one place to see about your insurance options. Spread over 12 months, no big hit up front. I agree with the other posters, you have WAY more options when you have your own plates, and aren't quite as much a slave. A CVOR application is just a form filling exercise. You should have one for just these occasions, as well as the set-up for your dreamed for independence.
