How much diesel per mile?
I know the answer to this question has a lot of variables, but I just wanted to get an idea. How much fuel will my tractor spend per mile fully loaded? Let's say I have a Detroit series 60 engine, well maintained. I can't give an example of what would be the load since I don't have experience in that area. I know what my dump truck gives me when I'm full - about $20 worth of fuel for 30 km round trip (15 km full and 15 km empty). Just need an idea for tractors so that I can guage prices.
Thanks! Jen |
I get about 6 mpg, loaded.

If your truck gets 6 mpg and fuel is $3/gallon then your cost per mile for fuel is $0.50/mile. That roughly translates into about 1 1/2 pints per mile for fuel (I think). You will need to do the conversion into metrics.

The other day, I was fully loaded, and got 7.1 MPG with my '01 Volvo 660 w/ 465 HP Volvo engine, but I was on very level ground going 60 MPH.

The good measure would be the percentage from gross revenue per mile, considering total hub miles run.(loaded, empty, personal) At the current diesel prices, for a leased to a company O/O 25-30% would be the good mark. 35% barely acceptable. Anything higher, means you are doing something wrong.....
