Would Generally A 2006 Get Better MPG Than The Same 2007 Truck?
 

I'm possibly in the market for another truck. My 2001 Volvo 660 w/ 465 HP Volvo engine & autoshift is at 1,060,000 miles now. It runs great as always, uses little oil, and still gets great fuel economy, but I know it won't last forever.

I'm looking to buy another Volvo w/ Volvo D12 engine. Due to pollution control devices, will a 2006 get better fuel economy than a 2007?

I don't know what year for sure Volvo started the EGR engines but I would suspect it was 2005 or 2006. My personal opinion would be to by something that does NOT have EGR if fuel mileage is a concern, and it should be for an OO.

If the rest of your current truck is in good shape, perhaps you could just do an in frame.

Actually, my 2001 has an EGR.

My 2003 C15 had no EGR, and CAT started their ACERT Program in 2005. Difference was my 2003 T600 got 7mpg.... my 2005 9400i got 5.5mpg. Both spec'd the same. ACERT IS JUNK IMHO.

My 99FLD w/S60 and flat-top that was pulling a van trailer avg 7.2mpg. Pulling tank im at almost about 8mpg all around. Stick with the old truck and rebuild the motor. The $10k for the overhaul is better than buying a used truck and having to deal with someone else's problems and might poss have to O/H the motor anyways a year down the road.

The important thing is the engine build date, not the truck model year. They started building "2007" trucks in 2006 and due to engine inventory levels, you can actually find some 2008's with the 2006 engine...so check the engine date. All other things being equal, you will get better fuel mileage with the older engine. The DPF, with its regen cycles, and increased EGR that came along with the '07 engines not only robbed some fuel economy buy led to some serious maintenance headaches. Though one would hope that a used truck has most of the bugs addressed.

And when California says you can’t run your pre 2007 truck in their state anymore? And when the other states follow their lead? This is in the very near future. I think it was 2012, but they might have bumped it back to 2014 for now. I agree that in general the older trucks are more reliable, cheaper to maintain and in most cases more fuel efficient. I’m running an ’06 ISX with EGR (unplugged for the last 150k miles) and I’m pretty sure that when it needs a rebuild in two to three years (we average 200k miles a year) I will sell it and buy one of these 2010 models that are averaging 8 – 9 mpg. By then, it will be worth it to save the money on fuel and to be legal in all states for a while.

I'm trying to judge by your pic but are you leased to CR England?

I don't run to Cali anymore, and trust me, no other states are going to follow suit. Besides the fact that the state is broke (and should prob sell it to another state LOL) I'm sorry, but I highly doubt any newer engines are going to avg 8-9mph loaded across the board. Especially since the new trucks are on avg weighing 1500lbs more now.

I agree a 2010 truck would be great, but then again a $2400 mo. payment isn't.

I bought my 1999 FLD in 2004 for $30k cash in hand. Never had a payment, and never will again. I guess thats how I manage to work 3 days a week, paid my brand new house off in 5yrs and have no bills besides cell phone, XM, and utilities. It's amazing how much fun trucking can be when your not working to pay a note, then the bills.

I'll just wait a few years, pick up a nice streached '07+ Pete for cash if need be, but I see more of a restored '72 Pete/KW in my future
