Flying J Moving Corporate Office

I spoke with a representative of Flying J a couple of days ago and was informed that Flying J is moving their corporate offices to Knoxville, TN. According to this individual, they will be moving into Pilot corporate headquarters.

Expect major changes in the look of Flying J. I have already noticed that Flying J fuel prices are no longer cheaper than Pilot. In fact, they seem to be right at what Pilot is selling their fuel for, at least at the stores where I have noticed. A short while ago I was told that the Haw River Flying J will be making some major changes. The restaurant will be closing and a Denny's will open in it's place. The drivers lounge will be converted to a Wendy's. Bye, Bye drivers lounge. I expect to see these type of changes throughout the Flying J system. :(

I never liked the Pilot. There prices were generally higher than any convience store t/s in the area. It also seems that they go out of their way to remove driver conviences such as tv lounges, resturants, or drivers areas. Almost never have a shop where you can get a flat fixed. To me they are just an overrpriced Loves. Look how Pilot have ruined the Giant t/s on I-40, east of Gallup.

I will admit that I have parked overnite there sometimes, but only if a real t/s is unavailable. I'm now taking my re-fueling business mainly to the TAs', now that they have taken over the Petros'.

At least they'll have good coffee at the new headquarters. That's about the only positive thing I can think of.

Denny's is OK with me. Grand Slam for 2.99 are you out of your mind.:)

Yup,

Also i talked to a cashier at flying j and was told that pretty soon flying j will take comchecks too. I really hope to be happening soon, since i'm always hunting for the lowest price possible.

I knew it I knew it and i have said it a few times since this merger was announced that Pilot f-ing hates drivers lounges for some reason and they will soon all be gone from the J's. I guess when i get back on the road most J's will be off of my list for killing time on breaks and re sets. Whay does Pilot hate for drievrs to have any kind of comfort at all? We need more wendy's and subways about as much as we need more logbook rules.

I hate the J is not on it's own. I liked the big parking area's & the restaurant's compared to others. the lounge, bathrooms & showers were better also. it is a shame the j could not find a way to make it. I felt like I was at home at the J.

Jackrabbit379 11-25-2009 04:52 PM

I never cared too much for Pilot myself. They seem to not be well maintained, and their locations aren't the safest places.
I've stopped at the Pilot on I-40 exit 325, in Roland, Ok where I exit off to go into Fort Smith. That Pilot is not very old, but it's nearly run-down.

It seems to me that every truck stop that is half decent gets purchased by the one which isnt.

TA bought Petro and now this...

Jackrabbit379 11-26-2009 03:06 AM

All the good ones are being bought-out, and the junky, nasty ones are doing well. :hellno:

geeshock 11-26-2009 10:09 AM

thats becuse they can do junk cheaper than quality unfortunately. I might not have been a big j fan but I did like their drivers lounges, and their restaurant from time to time. Heh, even their pizza from time to time

Fancy_Maneuvers 11-26-2009 02:46 PM

I do not like these types of mergers either.

I remember how shocked I was to learn that the Iowa 80 was a TA!

I got a cold chill when TA bought Petro.

I tend to like Pilot because their showers are generally newer and standardized, but their parking generally sucks.

My brother only goes to Pilot for the crushed ice.

I have always seen Flying J as The Independent one. I wonder what will happen to it now...

Some of them are already taking Comcheck. I would no longer expect the lower prices from Flying J. I have noticed since the buyout that their prices pretty much reflect that of Pilot.

I don't mind Denny's. I do like their grand slam. I don't like all the fast food restaurants that I anticipate them putting in all the Flying J's. I plan on spending more of my money with the independents. The food is better as is the service. And prices are generally less than with the big chains. I need a more balanced food choice.

This makes me glad I'm not OTR anymore! I loved to stop at a J and get a $1.99 PB&J and a drink or if it was sunday then a Buffet(depending on the location) and most of the time They had good sized lots to park in. I never liked the pilots except for the crushed Ice, 2 for 2$ hot dogs and that was about it. Almost everyone I've been in has the worst designed lot :( The J in SLC on SR201 used to have one of the best little diners ever, but the actual T/S and the lot were horrendous! But then they upgraded the lot and store and put in their chain restaraunt and lost the diner :( Give a little to get a little. Are they still gonna keep the refinery running here in SLC(well actually woods cross)

allan5oh 11-28-2009 04:19 AM

The pilots never had good driver facilities because that's what the big fleets want. They want their drivers to get fuel, some nasty food at the fast food joint, and keep rolling. The flying j's always marketed more towards the o/o or independent. That will change.

I don't get a discount at the FJ's though, but usually 4 cents per gallon at the pilot. Pilot is almost always cheaper for me.

GMAN 11-28-2009 05:36 AM

You can get the cash price and a monthly discount at the Flying J if you use their PDCA card. There is a minimum amount of fuel you need to purchase to qualify for the fuel discount. As far as I know they will keep their refinery business separate from the stores. At least that is what I have been told.

heh, I can't eat to much junk any more, my body can't handle it like it used to. I eat a dubble cheese burger and I wake up 2 or 3 times during the night because of heartburn. I need decent food in my diet, I can do a salad from time to time, even a subway sub isn't to bad once or twice a week but I like a real meal every now and then, not to mention it's just so much healthier.

GMAN 11-28-2009 11:38 AM

I try to eat vegetables at least once a day. I would expect that with these new changes Pilot is making to the Flying J's that more drivers will start to eat out of their trucks. I don't care for Wendy's. If I eat fast food I prefer something like Subway where I can at least get some fresh vegetables. The quality of meats that they use in McDonald's and some of the other fast food restaurants is not the best. If you eat fast food all the time it will affect your health. If I get an omelet at Flying J then I usually substitute fruit for hash browns. It is much more of a balanced diet.

Jackrabbit379 11-28-2009 03:41 PM

Most everyone is going to 'fast-food'. I reckon since the small percentage of drivers are in a hurry to eat-and-run, they think everyone is that way.

GMAN 11-28-2009 04:11 PM

I don't mind eating some fast food, but I prefer sitting down at a regular restaurant at least once a day to relax and have a decent meal.
