Driver compensation questions - % of load

Hello,

I'm in the process of adding a 3rd driver. I'm looking for info on what drivers are getting paid on percentage of load.

I recently started hauling some better paying freight that probably won't be as many miles as my current driver is used to. I'm considering switching to % of load vs. $/mile.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks!!

I pay 20% of the gross. Though I'm not sure how short of miles you do. My partner pays 25% but takes out more for fuel.

I'm not super strict on the 20% though, if a guy works all week he expects to make a lliving so I will bump it up so I always make sure that if a guy works he makes a decent check.

Are you using factoring services?

When I've worked as a company driver, I made 24.5-25.5% of the loads gross pay. Of course, the company kept the fuel surcharge. In the few times I actually get the detention pay that was due to me, it was in the same % of the total detention pay the company received.

I pay 25% of everything the truck makes other than the fuel surcharge.

Hey Scott,

Are you adding a driver in your truck or leasing on an O/O? If it is a driver, pay him in the 36 cpm range and you can offer him some incentives (call me for some ideas). If its an O/O, I know another guy hauling your freight and he is paying $1.05pm plus the FSC, he has the trailer expense etc. I recommended an 80-20% split, he went with mileage and has been keeping them running. Glad to see you're bringing on another one.
