Hi guys. I need some advice. I'll be moving shortly. Not too far, and not too heavy, so basically, i intend to do it myself. But still would like to hire some help packing, and other stuff. Where did you guys find helpers, and what's the costs? Thanks in advance....

If you're looking for labor, you can try the local moving companies, and see if they can provide labor, although this will likely be your most expensive option (anywhere from $15-$20 per hour per person). Given that this is the busy season, your luck on that may vary. Another place you can try is Labor Ready (or another labor pool if Labor Ready isn't in your area) - last time I used them, it ran me about $14 an hour. If you specifically ask for people with moving experience, they may be able to provide. U Haul also has a labor service, although I don't know how much it costs.

I had luck using movers from a local delivery firm that my company did business with. Mind you I only needed them for an hour or two to load the heavy stuff into the van. That's the route I'd take if I was to do it again. I'd look for small local firms in the yellow pages and see what you can find. (Given the economy I think you'll find some deals.)

One thing to consider - how much is keeping your stuff undamaged worth to you?

You can go to Home Depot and hire some Mexicans :) Make sure you take inventory.

Thanks guys. I don't really care about the stuff. Mostly i just need to move it out of apartment.... But i lived there for 15 years, so it's a lot....

craigslist has a category called labor/move under the heading of services I believe. Lots of people advertising moving services, some are licensed, insured, etc.

Labor from a moving company is 12-15/hr. The hhg season has been a bit tame this year, so you may be in luck. If you call labor ready, I'll await your horror story post shortly. Call a United, Atlas, Bekins, Allied, etc agent, ask for local dispatch and talk to that guy/gal. They usually have a 4 hr minimum and you may or may not have to pick the labor up from the agent. If they drive out, expect to throw them 20 bucks.
