question about adding more trucks
hey guys im looking for some differant opinions on buying more trucks.Im looking at buying one or two more trucks leasing onto the company i work for.Theyre going to be going all o/oand i see a good opertunity.I wanted to buy one more truck.o/o i know are telling me to buy three trucks or stay with one.Their theory being 2 trucks can support 3 truck should one break down. What their saying makes sense just looking to see what you think.By the way 2 out of three trucks will be paid for or 2 out of 2 will be paid for depending which way i go.

By the time you pay the drivers and all the truck expenses, there'll likely be nothing left for you, so why take on that added responsibility and liability?

how many good drivers can you get?

maybe the reason the co. is going (ONLY ) o/o is cause they cannot keep drivers in this economy & want o/o's to deal with that instead of them ? I ahve no idea. not much info given here. just a guess.

There is some truth to odd numbers of trucks being better than even numbers. I would suggest you start with a single truck and learn the business before buying multiple trucks starting out. As with any business it takes time to learn your way around. It is a different environment going from a company driver to an owner where you are responsible for all of the bills. It is also different when you go from being an owner and operator of a single truck to an owner with multiple trucks and drivers. You are not only responsible for paying the bills but you must also find loads and make payroll. You are now responsible for the livelihood not only yourself but of others. Before you jump in to buying multiple trucks give yourself an opportunity to make things work with one. |
Thanks gman advice well taken. This is something im looking to do down the road and just trying to get some ideas.

It is good to plan ahead, mbozz282. You will be much better off taking it slower. It is more likely that you will make mistakes when you get in too big of a hurry. You will have good and bad drivers. Once you start running your own truck you will become aware of little things that can cost you money.
