Maybe cummins isn't so good after all....

Always liked cummins, especially over cat since 2003 for many reasons.

However, my GF's cousin came over, and he works for a large city in mass transit. He said they bought 200 buses with the new cummins ISL engine, which is just the ISC apparently with different fuel injection. 2008 compliant.

In 3 months they've replaced 600 turbos. That's right. SIX HUNDRED! Apparently they load up with soot.

200 buses, 3 months, 600 turbos.

I believe the turbo would be the part at fault.

Cummins has had issues with turbos in the past. i was at our terminal at tunnel hill, ga. and a team pulled out in a NEW volvo with a Cummins and 10min later she is walking back (he's waiting for the tow truck) they blew the turbo on the on ramp (the truck had 34miles on it)

It would be a holset turbo, and who owns holset? Cummins.

boneebone 10-28-2008 11:55 PM

Still a turbo problem regardless of who owns them.

I think it is driver abuse. All 600 times.

I hope those turbo's were under warranty. I don't think it is an engine problem if the turbo is the only thing they are having problems with. But it does sound like they have a major turbo flaw.

allan5oh 10-29-2008 05:19 PM

Yes it's under warranty, but imagine the inconvenience of having a full bus and a turbo seizes up?

what model year are these engines allan? 2008?

Pirate 10-30-2008 02:00 AM

Buddy of mine works for a Cummins distributor. They are getting out of transit (and other buses), but I don't know if it's just the distributor or Cummins themselves.

This is the new Cummins "Variable Geometry" turbo ( The vanes turn to give more torque the more you push it and it is a POS !!!! Before I put a driver on my little truck I had it in the shop and had them put on the new style Jakes and the new Turbo. First one made it about 1100 miles then the next one made it about 2100 miles (some improvment). Had them replace it with a Cummins 444 turbo (one of the highest volume turbos made) and no problems since other than he had to double clamp all the air to air fittings from the turbo to the manifold :) Was blowing them off.
