Annual safety inspection??????
 

I just changed insurance companies and this new company wants an "annual automotive safety inspection".... I have never had to have one before. Where do i have this done? Does Pilot or T/A do them?

I'm pretty sure in CA you don't have to do a DOT inspection. Your state inspection supersedes the DOT one like here in New Hampshire. You can have it done at any dealer or big truck garage that does state inspection. They can do your trailer also.

Thanks... maybe I'll just take it to Peterbilt. We also have a T/A here with a garage. This inspection is only for the insurance co. not for the state. But they say they will cancel my policy with out it. :shock: The funny part is about 4 years ago I had coverage from this same company with this same truck and they didnt ask for an inspection then :roll: oh well....

ANNUAL INSPECTION – § 396.17
Every commercial vehicle, including each segment of a
combination vehicle requires periodic inspection that must be
performed at least once every 12 months. At a minimum,
inspections must include all items enumerated in the
Minimum Periodic Inspection Standards, Appendix G to
Subchapter B of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
Motor carriers may perform required annual inspection
themselves. The original or a copy of the periodic inspection report
must be retained by the motor carrier for 14 months from the
report date.

Before I retired, my employer took their trailers to a certified mechanic for annual inspection although they had their own mechanic. Tractors received their annual sticker at Ryder or Penske. The standards for passing an annual inspection are more strick than the daily or pre-trip inspection. I don't see how you could operate four years without DOT annual inspection stickers on tractor and trailer. In Michigan, a rig without evidence of annual inspection is sure to get a Level 1 inspection when they set up truck inspection in a rest area.

We don't require a DOT inspection in NH. We have a state inspection and are required to get inspected twice a year. Our state inspection supersedes the DOT inspection and is good for all 48 states, Canada and Mexico. There are many other states with the same inspection, I think California is one of them.

Site all the regs you want, we don't need no stinking DOT inspection if your from NH.

I have a local truck stop who does inspections on my trucks and trailers. I don't like to do business with TA, but they can usually get you in and out fairly quickly if all you need is an inspection.

If your insurance company requires an annual inspection than ask them for a list of their garages that they approve of. Go to one of them.
