Fuel costs as a % of total revenue?

Do any of you keep up with your fuel costs this way? I'm just wandering what your % might be. It would probably be beneficial to know what if your flatbed, van, hhg, etc, etc and whether your leased or independant.

Thanks, Arky

I am running at about 35% right now. I am in a 40' straight truck leased to an expedite carrier.

I do not believe that a straight truck can accurately compare to tractor/trailers who run at a much higher weight. But fwiw.... Truck 1 is at .79 cpm (i drive ) Truck 2 is at .77 cpm. this also includes reefer fuel. Truck 3 not on road yet.

thx, and I agree that they are not comparable as far as cents per mile, but I think it would be interesting to compare as a percentage of gross revenue. It is a business either way...money in vs money out.

No doubt, your trucks run heavier and use more fuel, but your rate per mile is probably well above mine also.

I'm just being curious and I think it's a good measure of profitability.

I'm currently running about 37% of my total revenue for fuel (dry van). Hopefully with the generator I can shave a few points off of that.

Or I could just make more money. That would work too.

37.6% for June. That's for an independent flatbed carrier.

GMAN 07-12-2008 11:01 AM

A friend of mine checked his a few months ago and came up with 43% for fuel.

By the way, that was with a flat bed.

two of our trucks are over $1/mile now. The other one (the one I drive) is .79. Can't give you a % of revenu tho.

BanditsCousin 07-12-2008 02:03 PM

Well, my fsc is 36% right now, so my fuel has been free, or close to.
