Paul, you really shouldn't include non-trucking revenues (brokerage) or other operating revenues in the calculation if you want an apples to apples comparison.

Actually the best operator in the truckload business (in terms of making money) is Heartland and has been for a long time. Werner also operates pretty well from operating ratio but Heartland puts nearly as much on the bottom line as Werner with 1/4 the revenue.
Schneider is thought to also operate very well but as a private company no reliable data is out there. |
I wonder how they account for the profits they make on those lease purchase deals?

I wonder how they account for the profits they make on those lease purchase deals? Did I say that? |
Non-trucking revenue or other. Unless it's done under the umbrella of a completely separate entity.

I cannot give a hard number for 2007, that will be available in about a week.
As for my costs: Fuel right now costs around 50-55 CPM. Shop rental is $1800 a year, so around 1.8 CPM. Cell bill is around $800 a year, around .8 CPM. Maintenance/repairs I'm going to "stab in the dark" at 8 CPM. That's probably a little high. I don't pay for any type of trailer, insurance, tolls, or anything. So on the "high side" I'm around 65 CPM. Right now my rate is 1.46, so I think I'm doing well especially when you figure in all the drops/border crossings. Total profit is usually somewhere around 90 CPM. |
